I think this song is connected to the Saosin song "Seven Years" that Anthony wrote. First of all, they share a lyric: Seven Years: "I would find a way without you." The Greatest Lie: "I could never find my way without you." Also, it is well known among early Saosin fans that "Seven Years" is a letter from Anthony addressed to his father, because his Father didn't think running away to join a band across the country was best for him. Since many lines in "The Greatest Lie" talk about his father, I belive the songs are connected if not about the same subject. |

Because this is my favorite song, i'll explain my thoughts on it thoroughly. It is about two friends with strong feelings for each other, but for one reason or another, they never get together. Although the friendship continues and they think they are over each other, when the bride finally has her wedding with her fiance, the two friends come to the realization that they have finally given each other up for good, and this makes them both very uncomfortable. "M4VTC and H, might need to provide this number at the gate." The purpose of this line is to show that he is boarding a plane. "Steady pilot, cause i'm half afraid. I can't believe you'd ask me that, of course I dont believe in fate." He asks the pilot to fly steady because he is afraid of flying, and the pilot asks him if he believes in fate. Since he has the bride on his mind, and the realization that he won't ever be with her, he answers "of course I dont believe in fate." "Would you be depressed if I attend that wedding but only as a guest?" A pretty straight forward question directed at the bride. He's basically asking her if she can handle what is ahead. "Such an unfaithful bride draped in a dress.. threads of my regret." He's reaffirming that the bride really wants him, and that he regrets letting her go because it has lead to this wedding where he is only a guest. "Sing it loud to drown out the feeling, when you're feeling much more odd than (even)" He is saying that being at the wedding of this girl who he still loves is very odd, and he's doing everything he can to distract himself. "Half as true as dishonored sea men, we'll breathe pacific and fight our demons." He is comparing him and the bride to dishonored men who become sailors to escape their old life. "we'll breath pacific and fight our demons" basically means that they will go on living their lives apart and try to bury or destroy their feelings for each other. "so arch your back, and flip your hair, make eye contact so you know I care....but only as guest.." You just have to picture this in your head.. the bride walking down the aisle, trying not to stare at the guy, so making subtle movements such as arching her back and flipping her hair to steal glances at him to make sure he is watching her. A depressing song. |
