the break down when the lyrics aren't going is fucking amazing. you can feel the emotion from the music and rarely does that happen.. at least from me. where solely the music affects me. even though its pretty much redundant.. it's amazing. you don't even get slightly annoyed as to the fact that they're repeating the same words over and over again. and i love how its not clean cut and starts off as recorded from like a venue before a show. the fact that it's girl/guy voices too just adds something to it. it's really amazing. |

I just saw these guys tonight and before they played this song Travis said amazing things. He said he'd never write songs about the shitty things girls do to guys, even though a lot of guys/bands do. And he wanted every girl to know that they pretty much are amazing. That even if they haven't found the one yet, one day when you least expect it it will sweep you out from under your feet and you won't know what hit you. So don't worry about it now. And he said his girlfriend is his life, his everything, he doesn't know where or what he'd be without her.. that he lives for her.
He made me cry.

he doesn't want her to overreact about him not being faithful. now he's trying to make up for the problems he's caused. he really is sorry but he doesn't even know how to express it her himself. and he feels so horrible about it because he really does love her to the core. and he keeps trying to think of ways to convey his regret for what he's done. he's holding on to the relationship even though she wants to let go, he's hanging on to a thread because she's hurt and he knows what he's done to her is unforgiveable. he wants to make it last as long as he can because it is the first girl he's ever been so attached too and thats his reason for feeling so bad about it now. their first kiss and their relationship is the first time in his entire life that he's felt connected, that someone has finally understood him. she made him defy what he knew before her. she made him look outside himself to become a better person. and no matter what has been said in the midst of everything.. from the beginning to the end or the break they take.. it's all been done out of love, everything they've said has been out of love because they do care for each other. they've had other problems before, that are probably due to his mistakes and he's so upset with himself that he's asking why she can't just let it go again even though he knows each time she does it kills her.. it's just his selfish reasoning. she tells him how she really feels, that its not just the last time he's messed up.. that she cannot take it anymore. that they need a break because she is hurting too much. and although love is worth pain.. if it is all you are feeling you need to give it room to breathe and she realizes this. he's left in awe that she's finally made this self realization. he's so taken aback that she finally stopped just dealing with it. his words are defenseless to everything she's telling him. he's defenseless to the truth he hasn't been able to face since the beginning. and he's screaming out because now he's the one feeling the pain and darkness. she shifted it to him. they love each other greatly, they are in real love..but they both need time apart to heal wounds, and make things better before they advance and the problems swell.
i'd say my interpretation is the best so far.
considering this song is pretty much my entire life right now.
it's a beautifully put together song, the music conveys the lyrics better than anyone could. |

It's like the song builds up slowly to the ending lines especially with the instrumental part right before. And seriously, you can feel the hurt when he says "I need you." Ben's voice kind of carries the lyrics. So, so well. I can just close my eyes in bed and listen to this song over and over again. It kind of brings a sad peacefulness. The fact that Walla wrote it is a breath of fresh air. No offense to Ben at all. But it gives Death Cab a little dimension.
It's by far the best song on the album. The introduction is amazing, the lyrics too and Ben's voice just perfect.

Sure people who you might not think appreciate the music sometimes start to listen to it after a while and know it. But that doesn't mean it's bad music. It's still the same songs you liked when you first listened to it, isn't it?. The lyrics didn't change, nor the actual music itself. Okay, maybe people like to keep things to themselves, to have them as their own and having other people know Head Automatica songs can peeve you but if you REALLY care about the music.. that won't bother you. You'll still love it for what it is despite who else listens to it. You listen to music cause you have a connection to/with it yourself.... you dig?
Oh and this song is fucking amazing. Whenever I hear it.. I feel the sudden urge to dance but at the same time it also gives me the feeling to just go "awww." and how I feel sometimes of course.

Because of the fact that this song is as simple as it is.. makes me love it as much as I possibly could. I can listen to it over and over again. And considering the fact that I can't go out for a drive on my own because I'm not old enough to do so.. I can just lie in bed, look up at my ceiling and picture a dark night in the summer with that smell of the air, and the coolness you feel when you step outside yet it is so comforting and enjoyable. But in a car. I picture myself leaning against the window, as the passenger.. seeing everything that is being described in the song and feeling that feeling of time and balance of everything. It's a lot about imagery to me. It puts me in a place where I feel alive... in the passenger seat. It's kind of inspiring and hopeful.
It reminds me of The Perks of Being a Wallflower also and how Charlie feels infinite in the ride, with that perfect song, on that night.. where you know it only exists in your youth so you cherish it more.

When I first heard this song I thought it to be about the world evolving/fate/creation because of the kind of mood it sets but also about somebody and needing them. I honestly play the song sometimes just to hear "I need you so much closer..." constantly repeating because as everyone has said before.. it is SO, SO simple yet so amazing and touching and deep and no matter whether you are experiencing something that could make you say that or not.. you feel it and you feel the meaning however you take it and it's honestly just..wow.
At the end when it goes "So, come on.. so come on.." it kind of sounds like a positive ending. It seems to get more lightly sounded and the fact that you kind of feel like you hear more than one voice...it's like everyone telling you it's gonna be alright. I don't know. Maybe I'm just out of my mind.. |

You know those thoughts in your head that you think throughout the day that you wonder if anyone else thinks or corresponds in the way that you do? Well those lyrics are one of those thoughts I head that I didn't think anyone else had. Just proves that you're never the only one.

I think it's kind of a definition of a song. Because songs are what this is describing. Or maybe his thoughts/feelings/anticipations about what the listener of the songs he creates will think of it each time a new song is created.
I know the introduction is amazing but to me it does seem a bit lengthy. Although, I like how in some parts of it.. you think singing will begin but then it just goes back into the music. Kind of very cool. :).

This song says something that almost every person can picture themselves saying. The fact that he put it so perfectly is stunning. We all want the love that doesn't seem to exist in real life.
The fact that the music and beat is out of the ordinary is what makes it beautiful. A lot of people try to sound different and unique because so many artists/bands sound grossingly alike and fail miserably at it. The Postal Service/Ben Gibbard achieve it and beyond.
