You can't judge anything from from what he says in concert. Stephen has a habit of making himself and his material shallow for the masses at concerts; trust me, I've seen them several times. He introduces Motorcycle Driveby as being about "a girl who dumped me, on my skinny white ass" harharhar. We know there's more to it than that. Same with 'Forget Myself' - "This is a song about how I was BAAAD, last summer." Riiight. It may also convey powerful messages that just about anyone can relate to but we aren't going to talk about those, no no. All I'm trying to say is that he likes to project a bad-ass image of himself and his music, but alot of it is pretense. Most everything he writes is very personal to him, he just doesn't like to get all poetic when he's trying to keep a stadium full of cheering people happy. So I stick by my interpretation of the song. Stephen may love women, but he's anything but shallow... he's at heart just a real emotional guy, and a genius lyricist.

Not to sound like a Jesusfreak but this is definetely about God. It's not "whatever you want it to be". The imagery of thunder, the mention of "His grace", (note the capital "H" in the lyrics booklet) and crying out to heaven all very obviously point that out. *crawls off soapbox*

Yeah I love that line too catyoogd... That one line actually makes me think it's about someone who's died. But then again it COULD be about several people, I don't know. It's definetely my favorite one on the cd tho.

My friend and I think its about sin in general; kind of like the Fall and adam and eve's first sin. It's like... our own free will is tearing us apart because we don't know how to live our lives without the "maker" (ie - God) to guide us. Lots of the imagery (being led into the desert, for one, the whole idea of human clay, for the other) is biblical also. Another result of Stapp writing bible verses as punishments.

... I fully have no clue what this song is about. The RK interlude before it talked about death and fearing death... And so for awhile I just assumed that's what it was about. But now I'm starting to think it's kinda like "Everyone's a Junkie"... kinda. The line "their mechanical thoughts have left them out on their own" is key.

Duuuude.... Lyrics are reeeeally off. Anyways, as far as I can tell, this song is about trying to be righteous in a world that's gone "black", about conquering all of the negative influences- "looking for that light". and yeah, that line "I'm really not that different, you just made me think so..." suggests another person's influence; a college junkie making someone innocent feel like they're in the minority in the world. Am I totally off?

.... I've always thought this song was about a stalker. o_o I read about it on a 3EB lyrics message board and I've kind of ascribed to that theory since. Yknow... "my smile will not mislead you"; "I grab at you, I can't stop grabbin at you", etc. But I think Sweetygal16's interpretation is a lil more plausible. :-D

Um, ok... I'll agree that 1000 Julys is about sex, and I'll even agree that Deep Inside of You is about sex, but this one definetely isn't. Stephen realizes that life is too short, and he doesn't want to waste it, so he lives his life like it's constantly fading; (like a "burning man") experiencing everything and anything. "I won't get enough until my legs are broken". He's a burning man, he's running around like hell; ie, he's living his life to the fullest. He won't stop until his legs are broken means he won't stop living his life until he's died. He may refer to sex in some of the lines, but that's not what the the theme of the song is. It's alot like the theme to "The Red Summer Sun", but then you probably think the theme to that is sex too.

Wow, never even noticed that whole last stanza but it really puts the whole song into perspective doesn't it? It's interesting in a way. So 3EB don't promote random acts of violence and they're against gratuitous violence in movies. That's always cool.

Duude. As far as I can tell, this song is supposed to be a stereotypical representation of a relationship in LA. Everyone is so superficial and without any real feelings that they operate like a big machine.

It's definetely about a guy who's girlfriend is in a coma or something. He mentions the hospital and hospital sheets and stuff. And he's holding onto the one tiny hope that she'll pull through and so he's still holding true to all the promises he's made to her, thus in a way "carrying her around.. in the background." Probably one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. i love it.

Yes! thats it right there. I used to think it was about a failed relationship but Zelliq is right... You can tell. "But I'm sure you're my friend"... "But I'm sure you still care" It's like being blind to the fact that someone isn't as close a friend as you like to think.

wow... man o man... WOW. I had no idea what this song was about but now it all makes absolute perfect sense and it makes me want to cry. Amazing. Our Lady Peace can put emotion and music together like no other.
