Jars of Clay – Fade To Grey Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is entirely about being lost.

the fading to grey is an illustration of right and wrong joining in his eyes, and he can't find the path he ought to be following.

he intermixes it with the picture of god's willingness to save him "and then i see you there with your arms open wide" etc.

basically, this song covers what it's like to be dazed and confused living your life apart from god, and the plea of having god come correct your ills.

Wow, what imagination.

This is seriously the easiest song to interpret on the entire cd. Dustin even says it's a "love song" in the special edition liner notes.

"It's been so long, and tin cans and string for years." refers to being kept away from your significant other for a long time, and having to keep in contact only through phone. The use of "tin cans and string" adds to how lackluster the phone is compared to actual company with that person by bringing the children's toy into the picture.

The chorus is simply an illustration of how this person makes him feel. When you look at someone you truly love, you can see oceans moving, fires burning, and magic behind there eyes. Take it or leave it. It's true.

"But things can't be as they seem
I'm so far from home
This must be another dream, but my eyes are open"
This part seems to suggest that Dustin's wife had come to visit him when he was on tour, and he wasn't expecting it to happen. He was surprised and thought he was dreaming, but his eyes were open...

Thrice – Lullaby Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is a brilliant statement about communism, fascism, totalitarian governments and other 1984-esque disutopias that promise a beautiful existence with your fellow man but fail to deliver on the promise.

The leaders of such governments always do what is in the "best interest of the people," or so the propoganda states, but the people waste away.

This song seems to focus a lot on the lack of feeling these governments promote. Less emotion, more production. Peopple are machines, not emotional, and spiritual beings.

It really seems to be a response to works like 1984 and A Brave New World, where those who fail to be brainwashed by their imposing governments are struggling to find what life is really about, knowing there's more than this 'palid dream' that's thrust upon them.

Overall, an astounding song. I wish it had made the record.

Dashboard Confessional – The Brilliant Dance Lyrics 21 years ago
This song is bitter through and through.

It seems like it's about a point where Chris went through a bad breakup (hence the imagery everyone has quoted again and again and again in their comments.) Anyway, Chris went through a bad breakup and it seems he has a friend who is currently in a blossoming relationship. His friend is all "love rocks!" and Chris is horribly depressed. This song is like his side of the argument as to why love sucks so-ooooooooooooo much ass. Then at the end he takes a special jab at this guy by saying:

This is incredible.
Starving, insatiable,
yes, this is love for the first time.
Well you'd like to think that you were invincible.
(The way Chris once felt, and the way his friend feels currently)
Yeah, well weren't we all once
before we felt loss for the first time?
Well this is the last time.
This is the last time.
This is the last time.
(This is Chris's current feeling about love. It's very bitter, depressed and bleak.)

This song is me.

Thrice – A Subtle Dagger Lyrics 22 years ago
Whether you like it or not, this song is about religion. Deal with it. The "subtle dagger" is human nature.

It infiltrates, insidious
--Human nature cuts in, subtly and harmful.

It feints at love, betrays our trust
In what we've known since we were born
--It always seems that when we're being selfish, and going against God that things are going to be good for us (thus, temptations are often successful). But it is really working against us, and uprooting all of our must basic beliefs.

The truth we've found in all we see
Points to design
Still our chests swell
We'll never find true answers from a wishing well
--Everything we see says "Hey, there's a God here," but we get too self-centered to want to admit that we're the lesser beings here.

So feed us all another lie
To still our thoughts, appease our pride
So we won't have to change the way
We see, we live, we love, we die
--We continue to deciever ourselves to stop the thoughts of the possiblity of a supreme being, so we won't have to change the way we live our lives.

Our lusts precede our blasphemy
Our logic reads like notes from tainted autopsy
--Our desires are predecesors to our sins, and our thoughts (of self-centered Godlessness) are wrong and completely illogical.

Our souls they speak of something more
But we can't look beyond ourselves
--We inherently know there is a God, but we just can't get over the self-importance we have.

We implore empty skies because
Our hearts hold room for no one else
--We hope the skies are empty (there is no God) because we're too infatuated with ourselves to love God.

We extend our claws to grasp the shadows of the
Ideals we have lost
Casualty of a subtle dagger
Buried to the hilt in our heart
Blood on our hands
--We try to regain the beliefs we once had, that we killed with our self-centered actions and thoughts, but we never quite grasp them again, attaining only "shadows" of what we had. And, the fault is our own.
