Just a note on the Caldecott Tunnel: It seperates the Suburbs (Pleasanton, Dublin) of the SF Bay Area from the big cities (Oakland, SF). Thus it is very well-travelled and many people go through the tunnel then continue across the Bay Bridge (the non-Golden Gate, that joins Oakland to SF). It cuts through the Oakland Hills, and isn't that impressive as far as tunnels go. The most noteworthy thing about the tunnel is probably the number of people that commute through it daily. In the first verse, SoCo talks about the tunnel vs. the bridge, so these may be 2 girls both in the SF Bay Area. Both important parts of the Bay Area traffic, but different. If you REALLY want to start using metaphors (and if SoCo is familiar with the Bay), you could compare the differences in bridge vs. tunnel, suburbs vs. city, perhaps one is "closeminded" and suburbian-like while the other is more free and ....city-like? I don't know, you make the decisions you want. The song rocks, and so does the Bay Easy (as I like to call it). |

One more thing...
4) This song is a DRUG and LOVE song...he's comparing someone to the high he gets from heroin:
"Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey."
ALSO
"But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen."
So perhaps the addiction is costing him the relationship or something, for when he gets high, he can't see this girl's beauty or some such thing...discuss amongst yourselves! |

1) I was told that this song was a drug reference when it came out in the 90s.
2) 90s is not OLDIES as one of you claimed...
3) My favorite part of these lyrics is the "ba da ba" part at the beginning...who's the poor sucker who spent time counting out all of those syllables? I salute you! |

I love the "video game-esque" backbeat...it's oh-so-delicious...then the actual song itself is quite cool, with a nice mix of techno/rock/ballad. The best part of this song is really that it brings me back to Rock Steady, which I thought was a good album but all the songs were repetitive (e.g. Hella Good, Hey Baby, Rock Steady)...I just got tired of those songs because they never really developed into full songs, just one long chorus. Honestly...go look at the lyrics and witness the repetitiveness...this song has some depth, and I love it, I love Gwen's sad/sentimental songs. Any suggestions on others like this? |

I just posted on One Slowdance about how this song is among my top 3 favorite Rufio songs (I just can't choose between Above Me, this, and Slowdance, although Above Me has a SLIGHT edge). I don't just want to repeat the obvious "Rufio rules! This is their best song ever!" In fact, I like Above Me a tiny bit more, cuz it's super hyper. But this song is great, cuz it's a slower, more romantic song. Know what I mean? Also, In My Eyes falls right between Above Me and One Slowdance in my mind, and in terms of pace/tempo. But...this song rocks and Rufio is the bestest! |

I think this has more to do with the pre-relationship flirting game. He goes to the coffee shop where she works and buys coffee as an excuse to see her. Then he's watching and staring at her, but she doesn't notice. Then, it goes the other way and he pretends he's not interested. The "cat and mouse" part makes it seem like a pre-relationship, but the lines before that kinda speak towards a relationship...I don't know! But I know how he feels! |

Honestly, I agree with "pot." But I like to think of it as a love song. Also, I don't think that it's been mentioned, but a zephyr is ALSO a type of hawk. So...that doesn't really help any. Oh and it's the WEST wind in Roman mythology...and the Mercury car....I really don't think the exact meaning matters as much...Travel is clearly involved...woo! |
