| The White Stripes – Ball and Biscuit Lyrics

Just saw a Dutch Proverb on Wikiquote that literally means "Wanting to eat a little biscuit with someone," where the meaning is "Feeling attracted to someone / Having sexual feelings for someone." That made me immediately think of this song, figured I'd post it. The Stripes usually seem to have a lot of innocence to their lyrics, so it figures they'd use the least threatening innuendo in the world.
I think he's basically coming on strong with a woman who doesn't consider him her first or even second choice -- "It's quite possible that I'm your third man, girl". I'd say that he's deflecting that with a joke, admitting that he might only be the third man with her but that he's as low as the seventh son with his own mother (in birth order). He's not rushing her ("take our sweet little time about it"), but he's saying they're gonna have fun and hit it off ("lets have a ball and a biscuit"). They'll get dirty, they'll get clean, and he promises it'll be worth telling everyone about. |

I guess it's that when you're stuck in a rut you can convince yourself that it's not just a temporary thing, but that it means more. That it's not just now but it will always be like that; you're "born to be down" and don't have much to look forward to because you're not bound for greater things but (as the title puts it) you're "Bound For The Floor". Why aren't other people like you? Are they too stupid, or are they just in denial? When you're down, it's easy to be bitter and call other people pathetic for being better off than you. |

I think sometimes in a relationship you can end up glossing things over, so you sometimes don't even notice anything's wrong ("I don't even care / that you were so unfair / I worshipped one time at your feet / never heard what was said"). When this happens, the end can come as a total shock ("in a flash you were gone") and then afterward you can realize what was really going on ("your words hit me just last night / when I saw it with the aftersight"). Even though it hurts ("Drown in my tears, succumb to my fears"), you have to move on ("I'm not O.K., but that's O.K."). |
