George Harrison – Run of the Mill Lyrics 13 years ago
Great song from All Things Must Pass. When you listen to this album you can come to understand why he remained so bitter about the break up of the Beatles. Clearly it affected him tremendously and the hurt comes through in many of his songs on the album.

Run of the Mill is a prime example. Here his subject appears to be Paul as he's mentioned, but it could just as well be John.

"Another day for you to realize me or send me down again" sounds to me like George talking about his Second Class Beatle status. Many of his songs were passed over (and ended up on this album)and outright criticized by John during the Get Back sessions.

"You've got me wondering how I've lost your friendship" is most likely to Paul, as at the time George was still friendly with John. "Though I'm beside you" could be in the studio, at the boardroom table (Apple) or whatever, but the subject is clearly someone who George felt very close to.

This ranks right up there with McCartney's "Dear Friend" on the Wild Life album in terms of their true feelings towards each other during the early 70s. Both, actually have similar themes, though Paul's song is almost "shocked" whereas George has a more resigned sadness. It's a very dark album, really.

James Taylor – Enough To Be On Your Way Lyrics 15 years ago
That's what I remember reading too.

In addition to that, I always thought the verses were "out of order." I mean, he wrote it - they're the way he watned it, but it doesn't tell a linear narrative.

TO me that final verse should be the beginning...he gets up, drives where he needs to, then he goes to the funeral, then they 'send her up the smokestack' etc. Just a thought.

James Taylor – You Can Close Your Eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
I seem to remember reading somewhere that this was written litterally as a song for his sister who was also a singer. So the line that goes "I can sing this song, and you can sing this song..." etc. might mean just that. Great song though!

The Beatles – You Never Give Me Your Money Lyrics 15 years ago
YNGMYM is the true start of the suite that ends Abbey Road. When the songs are examined together, especially McCartney's they form a complete song cycle moving from Am and ending on C. The theme here is, as many have pointed out, the impending demise of the group.

You never give me your money / you only give me your funny paper / and in the middle of negotiations / you break down

Paul has referred to this as "Apple Business" - they were not really earning money at this point, they were being given bank statements - "Funny paper." And the "break down" is twofold, the volatle board meetings with Klein, et al, and the breakdown of the Beatles' relationship.

As he continues on, he dwells on a phrase "nowhere to go" - the state of the Beatles' - or perhis his and John's - relationship. "That magic feeling" is the band, making music can still be fun, but it ultimately ends up with a break down - nowhere to go.

This also points to another McCartney tune around this time - "Two of Us." Clearly it's about his relationship with John, even though he's stated it's about Linda (which in lyrically does not make sense). But the lines are parallel - "you and me chasing paper, getting nowhere, on our way back home."

"Home" is also a central theme that McCartney had and it represents the band, his feelings towards the other Beatles; the way things used to be. (See Golden Slumbers - "once there was a way to get back homeward" and The Long and Winding Road "don't keep me waiting here, lead me to your door" etc etc).

Finally we get to the guitar apreggio that is repeated at the end of the suite "Carry That Weight/The End" where the verse from YNGMYM is reprised. At this point, he has fully accepted the inevitable. His resolution to "pick up the bags [and] get in the limosine" has presented him with the fact that he'll have to carry that weight - the Beatles thing - a long time.

No kidding.
