System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 23 years ago
first, mel, w/out Christianity, there would have been just as many wars. They won't stop just because you blame it on a religion. As a matter of fact, they won't stop until the second coming of Christ.
Secondly, when he (soad) says, "why'd you leave the keys upon the table?", he could mean the Papal keys, meaning why would God let any one be pope and take "the keys to heaven" and twist them to thier will. Look at Boniface. He lied to get his papacy, and was one of the worst Popes. if you look at it this way, this song is a parody of the Catholic Church.

I'd like to add the the part "into your hands i commit my spirit" is actually Jesus quoting from Psalms 31:5. Ponder the significance of that. Also, I am not aware that Jesus ever said "why have you forsaken me."

By the way, the Crusades were embarrasing, because we lost and therefore it was not a "holy war" as supposed.

Everyone who tries to find a ratrional meaning or system of life will ultimately fail and will live in despair, the "sickness unto death." Only Christian love can save humanity from itself, Dosteovsky says, but such love cannot be understood by humans.
One thing this song could be about, just for the sake of argument, is the suspension of the ethical for the religious, to put it in Kierkegaard's terms. When Abraham led his son Isacc up to the mount to be sacrificed, he did something totally unethical and yet true to God, for God told him to do it. Creed could be talking about forsaking others and their views for a personal relationship with God. The only thing about this I don't like is the note of self-righteousness here. it seems that he pictures himself far above humanity, "above all others", but it is written, "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10), and "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). Bring yourself back down to earth and follow Jesus' example here.
