Randy Newman – Louisiana 1927 Lyrics 18 years ago
It's downright creepy actually. I remember, purely by accident, hearing this song about a week after Katrina hit. I was totally blown away. Replace Coolidge with Bush, and you've got a perfect commentary on the Katrina disaster. Wow.

Laurie Anderson – Baby Doll Lyrics 18 years ago
God I just love this song. It's so much fun, so silly, and so totally how me and my brain sometimes interact. LOL My favorite line is "Do you mean, George?" LMAO everytime at that, especially since she wrote this during George the First, but it's even more applicable under George the Second.

Shawn Colvin – If I Were Brave Lyrics 18 years ago
I totally agree about the sigh. I remember the first time I listened to this album, and I totally recall being captivated by this song. Shawn is a lyrical master, on a purely sonic level I just love reading and hearing her words. She is perhaps the most underrecognized artist out there. But, the best ones usually are.

Sheryl Crow – No One Said It Would Be Easy Lyrics 18 years ago
So I'd be curious to hear what others think of this song. It's definitely one of my favorites of Sheryl's. My interpretation is that it's about the difficulties, the challenges, and the uncertainties of trying to make it on limited means with someone else. Trying to prove to everyone that it could really work.

The song takes an interesting change of direction, I think, with the couplet when she wonders "who he's picturing when he looks at me and smiles." Is she questioning his faithfulness to her? Also, the last line, "Oh, and look we've come this far." At first I thought this was her feeling a little self-righteous, for having made it with this guy. But upon further reflection, it feels more like a sarcastic statement, betraying her true feelings of disappointment and frustration.

It's a gritty song, that plays a little story in my head. I think that's why I love it so much.

Counting Crows – A Murder Of One Lyrics 19 years ago
If I had to describe this song in one word it would be "desperation." There is such desperation in Adam's lyrics: he's desperate to save his friend from this unhealthy relationship. Throught the song, he's pleading with her to leave this guy, to do something better with her life - to stop wasting it. I feel like the desperation builds throughout the song until finally at the end he can say only one word, repeated over and over again: Change.

Personally, I take away a more general meaning from the song: that being to just make the most out of life. We've got too little time to waste, we need to make the most of it, and not fall victim to people or situations that will prevent us from Living, with a capital L.

And I absolutely LOVE the double meaning of the title. Brilliant.

Billie Myers – Never Let Them See You Cry Lyrics 22 years ago
I've spent some time decrypting the latter half of the song, and thought I'd share. The lyrics below come after the last chorus. If anyone has additions/changes, I would welcome them! I've bracketed parts I'm unsure of.

...
SO NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU CRYYYYYYYYYY

I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME
I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME
AND YOU SAID YOU DID

(Never let them see you cry)
YOU YOU YOU REALLY HURT ME
YOU REALLY HURT ME

(Never let them see you cry)
I'M TAKING NO COMFORT
TAKING NO TIME
YEAH BABY WATCH ME CRY
DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL STRONG?
DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?

(Never let them see you cry)
PAST MISTAKES BABY
OH YEAH [YOU KNOW]
YEAH
TAKE NO COMFORT
TAKE NO TIME

(Never let them see you cry)
YOU [NEVER] FOUND YOUR WAY
FOUND YOUR WAY
[???? IN ME]
[???? IN ME]

(Never let them see you cry)
YOU REALLY HURT ME
[SUCH A BLITHE
SUCH A BLITHE]

I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME
(Never let them see you cry)
I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME
AND YOU SAID YOU DID
YOU SAID YOU DID
