"Rivendell" refers to the home of the elves in the "Lord of the Rings" books. Neal Peart was a huge J.R.R Tolkien enthusiast, and he uses references from those books to talk about his utopia, a place where you are totally at peace and completely safe. In the books, Rivendell was the one place that Sauron (the dark lord)'s powers had no effect on. Tolkien decribes Rivendell in unbelievable detail in the books, it's really quite amazing. The films also capture it beautifully. Perhaps this was Tolkien's own idea of Utopia. |

This song is about two old flames reuniting later on in life. So much later that they don't recognize or remember each other because "heart and thoughts they fade, fade away..."
I do subscribe to the idea that this could be about past lives, though, for similar reasons... |
