Pixies – Dead Lyrics 23 years ago
as far as I can tell, black francis wrote this song from the perspective of king david. i vaguely remember a biblical story in which king david sees bathsheba bathing and has her sent to his palace. meanwhile, he sends bathsheba's husband, uriah, off to the front line of battle, where he dies.

Sarah McLachlan – Dear God Lyrics 23 years ago
Of course it's by XTC... it's the first song most people think of when they think of XTC. It's kind of weird to hear Sarah McLachlan singing this because I always associate her with more spiritual/religious stuff, but I think she expresses emotion better in her voice than Andy Partridge ever could. Still, I like the XTC version better.

The White Stripes – Little Room Lyrics 23 years ago
Yes, I agree that it was great when they refused the Gap money, but now they've signed on with V2 and they're playing at... the MTV Movie Awards. Oh well, as long as they keep making good music.

The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics 23 years ago
Really? I think the meaning is pretty straightforward, but I agree that the way the Shins write lyrics is amazing.

The Shins – Girl Inform Me Lyrics 23 years ago
I think this is the easiest Shins song to understand -- the signer's infatuated with a girl but nervous that she's just leading him on.

The White Stripes – Little Room Lyrics 23 years ago
Yeah, it's actually growing on me the more I listen to"the album. Did you hear that they found Meg and Jack's marriage license? I really thought they were siblings, man. http://www.gloriousnoise.com/?pg=whitestripes1.php

Joan Baez – Diamonds and Rust Lyrics 23 years ago
I think it's about Joan's relationship with Bob Dylan.

Jeff Buckley – Lilac Wine Lyrics 23 years ago
Didn't Nina Simone sing this? It's about a woman (man in Jeff's case) who has just parted with a lover. Drinking lilac wine brings back memories of their love, but the visions are fleeting and she must go back to being alone. It's probably the saddest song I've ever heard.

John Lennon – Oh Yoko! Lyrics 24 years ago
This was in Rushmore, my favorite movie!
I don't think it really means much, but it's so catchy.
What does Lennon mean when he says, "in the middle of a cloud"?

Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics 24 years ago
I love this song. I think it's about trying to find some kind of meaning in life: something to believe in when you "don't believe in anything." The singer hopes he can find meaning, happiness, and a kind of immortality in celebrity.

The White Stripes – Little Room Lyrics 24 years ago
As far as I can tell, it's about the Stripes' growing fame. I don't particularly like this little song, but I love the album as a whole.

Pixies – Where Is My Mind? Lyrics 24 years ago
Hm... I have no idea what Black Francis was thinking when he wrote this, but it's the Pixies' best. Seems like anyone who hears it is infatuated with it...

They Might Be Giants – Ana Ng Lyrics 24 years ago
John Linnell said,
"I mean it generated out of this simple idea of imagining someone on the exact opposite side of the globe. There's only one person for you and they're located at some point at random on the globe. In Ana Ng, the person is located at exactly the opposite pole. That's all there is to it. Then there was this Pogo cartoon that I read when I was a kid. The characters are going to dig to China and one of them is wondering what's on the other side of the world and he actually pulls out a revolver -- it was weird to see a gun in one of these comics -- and he shoots through the globe."

Concrete Blonde – Tomorrow, Wendy (Andy Prieboy cover) Lyrics 24 years ago
A song about loss with an atheist slant. It's great.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Three Peaches Lyrics 24 years ago
This song is obviously about a suicide attempt, but it's so hauntingly beautiful. Just the way Jeff Mangum sings "and you somehow survived" is amazing. The line "Press yourself against whatever/you find to be beautiful and trembling with life" reminds me of the message in "Aeroplane" -- "let us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see." It's about the search to be happy in a world that's often otherwise.

Built to Spill – Cleo Lyrics 24 years ago
I've heard that this song is written from the viewpoint of a band member's unborn baby. But I always thought of it as a musing on how weird it is to exist and experience consciousness.
