maynard said in a acoustic session explaining this song and he said...."i had a friend who had some chemical problems. i ended up meeting his brother and his brother was so out of touch with what he was going through....so this song is kinda sung through the perspective of the brother who doesn't understand what his loved one is going through and in a way has no compassion for what he is going through...this song is called the outsider because that brother is standing on the outside of a understanding and doesn't get it. this song is from the perspective of someone who is ignorant and doesn't have the time or patience to understand what their loved one is going through." |

i was lucky enough to catch him in concert with sevendust....he rocked the place and played funny pranks when sevendust was playing....at one point he was running around in his tighty whities which said "tea bag" on the front and had a texas flag on and was running around saying "i am captain texas!!" it was hilarious... i dont' know if this helps but i read a interview between maynard and a college professor and maynard talks about parabola...heres some of it.....
9. In "Parabola" you speak about the body as a type of vessel. And you state that we need to hold on to and stay inside this holy reality. In contrast to your attacks on Christianity, how should we interpret the use of the term 'holy', here?
MK: "Life is to be revered. Few people take the time to realize how valuable their experiences are at any given time in their lives because we can be snuffed out in the next minute".
MK: "Life should be revered simply for the fact that we need to be thankful that we are currently able to consciously appreciate what we are going through right now. From this, I state that the feeling of eternity and reference to pain as an illusion in 'Paraboloa' is interesting. Is this tongue-in-cheek or is the meaning here literal?

Form and frequency, quantum physics and the fact that humans are made up of bits of matter (light), at this level, particles neither come into nor go out of existence, and at that level we are eternal. Keith Richards is still walking around, doesn't that prove something?"

This is a great song. maynard keeps amazing me after every album with more intense, deep lyrics that make the songs even better than they are. I was reading someones opinon that maynard makes up tool...with out maynard tool wouldn't sound right... almost as tool needs mayards voice....what do u think? |

I have to agree with Seth on how the song is about getting high, he says "nice to know you, good bye" i think of it as saying good bye to his sober side. the lines he says are basically about drugs.
"Better than witnessing newborn nebulas in bloom" (i see this as just him tripping out...)
"She who sees from up high smiles and surely sings
Prospective pries her once weighty eyes and it gives you wings" (basically a perfect example of what the drugs are like to him, giving him wings to seeing new things.)
these are some example on why i think this song is about drugs, even there first album the cover was a big shroom, so u know there on drugs in the first place |
