The Ting Tings – That's Not My Name Lyrics 16 years ago
I think there may be a bit of feminism in the lyrics. The fact that women are sometimes viewed as objects...and it's not important to treat them equally, but just call them "darling", or whatever.

buddhism seems to be very humanistic in the sense that it respects people for what they are...and doesn't place god above everyone necessarily...but within all of us...

The Pogues – The Broad Majestic Shannon Lyrics 18 years ago
pretty straightforward song...great feeling and emotion to it...

anyway, it's obviously about a love lost...the rusty tin can and hurley ball being a metaphor for the love that the couple once had

Suicidal Tendencies – Two-Sided Politics Lyrics 18 years ago
no one has commented on this? one of the best songs ever written! mike muir fucking rules...

what does he say after "two sided politics"? "one would have been enough for me"? that's sort of what it sounds like to me...

Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. It seems like a celebration of life to me. The good, the bad, and the ugly...it's all a part of life.

I may be stretching here, but I think maybe the thing that calmed Conor down (when he was freaking out before writing this) was the realization that he'd written a song, because that's what he does best. My experience has been that if I'm feeling down, the best thing to do is to get involved in the things that I love, the things I do best. And I always feel better. And that's why I'm staying here.

Cyndi Lauper – Time After Time Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is beautiful, especially the version with sarah mclachlan singing duo with cyndi...

i think the meaning is obvious, and has been covered, so i won't repeat...

The Thermals – A Pillar of Salt Lyrics 19 years ago
and just to add to what artemis said, i think he's saying that he doesn't believe in a god that would do such a thing (turn the woman into a pillar of salt for being sinful), which goes back to the previous posts about it being a religious commentary...

great song anyway...i've gotta go see them live...

The Beatles – Old Brown Shoe Lyrics 19 years ago
have to agree carp...when you have a band where george harrison is the third best songwriter (in most peoples' estimation)...you know something amazing is going on...

at any rate, now that i've read all the lyrics to this song, i like it even more...george was one hell of a songwriter...

BTW, check out the traveling wilburys, if you haven't already...good stuff...

The Goo Goo Dolls – Long Way Down Lyrics 19 years ago
anyway, back to the song meaning...

i think it's about drugs...think about the title "long way down"...
and then there's "is it pain that makes you real? cut me off before it kills me"

i think it has to be referring to drugs of some sort...although i know nothing about the band's history...

Pearl Jam – Love Boat Captain Lyrics 19 years ago
to me the key is this (and I think it's very profound):

to the universe, I don't mean a thing
but there's just one word I still believe, and it's "love"

it's Eddie's realization as a humanist that the only thing that matters is human love...because to the universe we don't mean a thing...but to each other we do matter...

Joan Osborne – One Of Us Lyrics 19 years ago
well, if we're the ones who created everything (at least here on earth) and we're the ones who are in control of everything, then what difference does it make whether there's a god or not...i mean, if we really do have free will, then a belief in god is pointless, since we're the ones in control...hrmm...

personally, i'm a humanist...i believe (rather unfortunately) that this life here on earth is all we've got, so you've got to treat other people with respect, and hope they do the same to you...so that life isn't hell..and actually, i think that's what this song is about...

Modest Mouse – Doin' the Cockroach Lyrics 19 years ago
something just occurred to me about the following lines (that I don't think anyone has said yet):

One year
Twenty years
Forty years
Fifty years
Down the road in your life
You'll look in the mirror
And say, "My parents are still alive."

you look in the mirror and see your parents because you have _become_ your parents...

this just furthers the basic theme of the song (and a lot of isaac brock songs, actually), which is that we're all just here existing the same meaningless life...

seems like his music is really an outlet for his frustration with the realization that life is meaningless...

i guess i feel the same way...you try hard to figure out the world and life, and your ultimate reward is...(drum roll, please...) the realization that life is pointless...woohoo! we're doin' the cockroach!

Modest Mouse – Bury Me with It Lyrics 20 years ago
if i had to distill the meaning of this song down to two words it would be this: "carpe diem"...i think he's just saying that if life gets to the point where it's meaningless and no fun...then he'd rather be dead...i know i would...

Modest Mouse – Doin' the Cockroach Lyrics 20 years ago
i don't know, i think he's just talking about how most people just exist, but never think about anything...like a cockroach...

oh, and the stanza about winter/summer at the end of the song...think about it...in the northern hemisphere when it's winter, it's summer in the southern hemisphere...he's just pointing out that everything depends on one's perspective...nothing's absolute...you have to think in order to realize that, though...if you just exist, like a cockroach, you only see things from your own perspective...

Indigo Girls – Virginia Woolf Lyrics 20 years ago
well, this song is about how Virginia Woolf inspired Emily Saliers (the songwriter)...and, ironically, now Emily has inspired us (well, I, for one, am inspired...this song has touched me more deeply than anything else I've listened to in the last couple of years)...this song is both deeply emotional and deeply philosophical

a lot of the song speaks directly about Virginia's life, for instance:

the men of anger (Virginia was sexually abused by her step-brother)
and the women of the page (...and, of course, she was a writer)

key to the room of your own (more or less a direct quote from Virginia)

the moon swallowed the sun (Virginia witnessed and wrote about the solar eclipse of, I think it was, 1926?)

the river eclipsed your life (Virginia was mentally ill, and ultimately drowned herself by putting heavy rocks in her pockets and jumping in a river)

anyway, I think the main theme is that, if you can inspire people, or even just one person, even after you've died, you have essentially achieved immortality (as Emily puts it, "weathered the storm of cruel mortality")

and on a more simple level, I think this song is a thank you to Virginia for her inspiration

David Bowie – Modern Love Lyrics 20 years ago
he's talking about a very common theme in music: the breakup...he continues to have his heart broken, but he "never waves byebye". But he tries. So he no longer believes in "modern love". As for the religious reference, I'm not sure what he means...maybe that he tries to believe in something besides modern love, but everything just leads back to modern love again...

Queens of the Stone Age – Go With The Flow Lyrics 22 years ago
This song is about a breakup...and all the horrible feelings you have before, during, and after...

(BTW, I don't think the photos are porno...as some have said..I think they're photos of the couple...who are now breaking up...)

the guy (the author) wants to move on to make a new mistake...("loose is more than hesitate")...

but what he's really trying to get something is something that's [worth dying for] "to make it beautiful to live..."

just my 2 cents...

Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution Lyrics 24 years ago
evolution/technology = progress? HA!

anyway, I like Eddie's alt. (live) lyrics:
"I'm the first mammal to wet (shit) my pants"

points out how absurd we really are...
