I agree with most of what's been said. I just wanted to add that I think the whole verse "A rush of words...we can't afford to be neutral on a moving train" is saying that law enforcement and the goverment would not be able to get away with the power trips and the brutality if the people of America all spoke out strongly against it. Doing what we're doing however (sitting back and complaning a bit) isn't helping anyting. The line "We can't afford to be neutral on a moving train" illustrates that the best. |

Wow, I really think the theory about the Serj's friend dying in the car accident makes a lot of sense. It seems to fit with every aspect of the song and really, is probably correct. Just for the record though, my own interpretatoin of the song before I read that was slightly different. I took it to be from the point of view of someone who was upset with the corruption in the church. The line "When angels deserve to die" is really what prompted that. Authority figures in the church representing angels, deserving to die because of all THEIR sins. The the whole "Why have you forsaken me?" thing to be an expression of the alienation felt as a result of the corruption the church yet the line "Father into your hands I commend my spirit" showed a desire to fall completely into the religion.
Though again, the car accident theory makes much more sense....just wanted to get mine out there too. |

I can't help but think that this song isn't so much glorifying drug use as suggested in the first post but more is a description of the mental battle a drug user is put through. On one hand, drugs are perceived as fun and a release and on the other, they have their consequences. I figure this mostly because of the sharp contrasts present in the lyrics when describing drugs for example "Makes you high, makes you hide". The "high" would represent the good feeling the drugs cause, the "hide" would be a contrast, representing the consequences of hiding the problem from police, friends, family, etc. Also the line "Do you really want to think and stop?" Suggests, in my opinion, an admittance that when you face the situation from a rational point of view, you'll have to deal with the problem. The lines about watching your spirit and body "fully drop" also makes me think this song is more about the consequences of drugs than anything else. |
