A werewolf is something that's scary. adding the descriptions of paper -something that can symbolize fragility- and brightness -something that may mean "showing off"- makes me think he is trying to refer to someone who wants to appear intimidating yet maybe inside they are fragile, broken? maybe? The second verse has this high tone of sarcasm: "so, bring another batch". Almost referring to them as if they're the type of people that like to dream about winning the lottery and obsessively buy tickets as a routine. In the third verse he continues to pound on the "dreaming" feature of these people he's describing. Movies, or the movie industry tend to portray something somewhat detached from reality. He makes it obvious then by saying that their dream is to leave the place they live in, or maybe the type of life they have. Finally they hit "the lottery", and leave, but with a sour and bitter taste of emotion. I tend to believe he's maybe referring to fellow musicians with a different attitude than Guided by Voices has towards the music world. Musicians who are shallow and focus on the financial success-side of the industry. They dream, but it's a dream that even if you could reach it with success, at the end it may leave you in a dark place. |
