this song is all about the band and their record label... "empty high roads are calling, calling my defences are slowly breaking down" this part is about record labels sying... if you dont like what we are doing then piss off... 'take the long road and walk it' kind of thing but since not band many bands do quit record labels the 'highways are empty' ... the "calling" part is the band being tempted to leave the record label. "fuck these headstrong scheming plans let's go head for the shore on my last legs i'll take a stand and jump from the top of the world if it's easier to burn tie me up on a stake fire is my only friend " this part is referring to how the record label has ways of dealing with bands that are tempted to leave and play mindgames with them but the band sees through this... and wants to stand against it. But if they do they will practically be destroyed by the record labels and maybe give the band a bad reputation to other record labels. "all we have left is self-control all we have to do is pack up and go " this bit is about the band having no freedom... the only thing they can really control is themselves but not the band in full... but they can go home and call it a quits if they get given no freedom as a band then they will leave the record label this is enforced with the part where it says "all we need is space to roam " then the last verse... the record label maybe said somthing like without us you'll crash and burn (making fire his only friend) and that they'll need the record labels help if they do leave the band. i hope i dont offend their record label but thats what this song means to me. the song is definitely about the band as it is about 5 kids (the bands 5 members) going to america to record their album. :p
