Myspace is still around (for music)
by iNapper on February 23, 2011Well the kids may have moved on by and large to facebook, but myspace continues to exists for musicians and their most hard-core fans. I was wondering if myspace was in the pop-culture conversation of the moment, I had them all but written off. Then I noticed in several really huge magazines that myspace still has a presence out there in the mainstream. First of all, I was looking at the new 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, and in it they have included thier soundtrack of songs that fit the theme of the issue or something. Anyways, half of the songs would have the bands website listed with the info underneath the song. The other half would list the bands myspace page, even though these bands all have websites too. On other recent occasions, I read in Rolling Stone more than once a bands Myspace page listed.
My thinking is that myspace is still around because of music. It began as a music site for fans to keep up with bands, and that is what it is clinging to as facebook soars up the virtual ladder. I would bet that some of these magz I read probably had a deal with myspace back when they were the "it" site. If so then it's most likely a contractual obligation for these magazines and other media to feature an artists myspace page.
Many artists still have a myspace page, and continue to sign up. It may not be the rage it used to be, but that may be better for music fans and their favorite bands alike who use the site.
