• frustration with sharing music

    by ghopson8787 on March 03, 2011
There are times when it can be very frustrating to share music. Most everyone I know is not incredibly interested in the significance of music, nor do they venture out of their musical style slot. I am also irritated with most anything on television lately, especially the commercials. I want my friends to just relax, put on some interesting music and converse instead. I should tell them, but the notion that a few would just get bored is obstructive. Arts and crafts party. Soundtrack: Let everyone choose two songs and keep it rotating.

Lead into Aphex Twin's "Ptolemy" with 80's feel goods (aHA's "Take On Me", Tears for Fears "Head Over Heels", Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" or "Here Come the Cowboys", Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence"). Then pull back into the feel goods from 80's.

Just saw the film Once and loved it. Watched it with my girl, and she loved it too. Even cooler for me is how much she liked the songs Guy and Girl sing. It seems apparent that I am bent on fashioning her interests to include music, and that the music she investigates associates well with my own. However, sometimes I feel like if I could transplant all my favorite tunes into an interesting movie my problems would be solved.

Just made my girlfriend a playlist, which got me to thinking of songs that she'd relate to but were from my own pool of music (she's really into country; not that that's bad necessarily). As an avid music listener, I'm usually taking chances to introduce my friends to the same music, so we can have a dialogue. It's pretty tough I've found to transport what sounded great at 2am in my room to a car-full of people in the woken hours. Thus, it was a good experience to listen to some of my favorite artists with my gf in mind, because it made me listen to the content of the songs and approve them for her specifically. As a playlist for her, I didn't want much that dealt with being in the process of breaking up, but I didn't mind if some of the subjects addressed were melancholy. I hope that she finds some things she likes. Then I can pat myself on the back.

  • brother's influence

    by ghopson8787 on August 01, 2010
So my brother just recently got on Facebook, and for his music interests he put only a few bands (the xx, caribou, aphex twin, pantha du prince). Seeing as he has always been my main influence in musical taste, I thought about why he chose to only list a few bands rather than the 50+ artists on some people's pages. I decided that his approach is pretty engaging. Rather than fill up his likes with so many artists that an interested party would be overwhelmed, he listed off a few artist of which he was really into currently. Therefore, I will also give a brief account of the artists I like these days and why, while trying to be concise. The National- I find them to be very relatable, like a group of guys I could see myself chilling out with. Also, one of my best friends recently exclaimed how much he likes this band after I gave them their newest album, High Violet. After all the CDs I've given him, it was kind of a break through. The XX- I saw them at Coachella, and they really came through. I felt they made a lot of people interested with that performance. Also, a cool girl in my class was happy to hear I also knew of them. I thought that since she liked them, my roommate might also be interested, and, sure enough, she was. This kind of thing definitely does it for me. Caribou- Although I love all of Swim, but one song ("Hannibal") continually gets good replies from those I show it to.
