interpretation
by writelikeness on May 19, 2010I've decided art is not open to interpretation. It's not "it means whatever you want it to mean." It's like life, or religion, we decide to respect each other's beliefs or even just ideas, but in the end, there is only one truth.
I mean, I write songs, and I'm usually trying to say something specific. There's really only supposed to be one interpretation. So of course there are misinterpretations; maybe I said something wrong, like when you say something you don't mean. It happens. That's the point: I meant to say something specific, or many specific things.
I wouldn't want anyone to use my words to say something I didn't think was true, and I sure as well wouldn't want someone to put words in my mouth.
The thing about "interpreting" art though is that we don't define it, but rather we describe what it makes us think about or what it makes us feel. We don't make it fit our situations, but rather we let it influence that way we view our situations. The nice thing about art is when that change in perspective is called inspiration, or hope.
