Why we listen
by mindblow on April 14, 2009It’s very intersting to read everyones opinions about what all these songs mean and I think that everyone is starting to realize what is most important is what it means to you. The beauty of art, especially music such as this is that I’m sure the artists created it based on an original idea and concept and as the creation evolved the artisits find other meanings and methaphors within the music and lyrics which gives it many different levels. But the true intention of music as well as other forms of art is that it strives to create a reaction from the viewer or listener to have them look inside of themselves to find what it means to them. I listen to music and appreciate art to learn about my own thoughts and wonders, I’m not looking for a deep meaning within a song that was placed their by the artist to reveal the truth about something or to save me. And that is why I think the music of Tool is so powerful because it has that reaction on people, to reach deep inside of themselves to realize what it all means to you. Therefore all of you are correct except for the people who are attempting to corrolate verses in the song directly to Maynard or another band members lives – they have created the art, it no longer matters what they wanted to say, they said it and now it is our turn to reach inside of us and broaden our understanding of what it means to be you. As one of my favorite proffesors used to say “there is no answer, seak it lovingly”
