• Yes, songs have multiple meanings

Alright, so I wanted to make one thing clear: I know songs have multiple meanings. Everybody interprets a song in different ways. The ability to internalize music and reflect it back from our own perspective is the most beautiful aspect of the musical experience. You have your life and I have mine. When you hear the word "faith" you will think something very different than I will. A song about loss will remind each of us of the thing we regret losing the most in life. Songs are meant to have multiple meanings and that's fantastic. Not everybody would be able to tell that I hold this view given the way I write my posts. Often times I post that a song is "obviously" about a particular subject. One might ask, "if you believe that a song can have multiple meanings, how can the song's subject be obvious?" The answer to this question lays in the way we are listening to the music. I have already explained the way one can listen to music internally, to evoke a unique experience that connects to our own lives. That's my favorite way to listen to music. The other way to listen to music is to experience the world from someone else's eyes. If we can forget our own life for just a moment, we might grab a fleeting glimpse of what it's like to experience the artist's life experience. How does he see faith? What loss is she mourning? This type of analysis is so much harder. This type of analysis is also much more fun to post on forums like this. Imagine it; we are a world-wide group of people who are all trying to forget who we are for one moment and experience the same thing. It's kind of magical in a way. So, yes, I'm trying to convince you to feel the music the way that I feel it. I truly value how you experience the song as an individual. However, you must admit that working towards one moment of us feeling the same way despite distance, lives, or politics is pretty awesome. I try to separate these two types of analysis and I post both types on the forums. So, yes, I know songs have multiple meanings... but they're also, if we're lucky, one meaning... even if for a second.
