My Favorite Pink Floyd Song
by TheDarkSideoftheMoo on July 26, 2008It's either Echoes (Album: Meddle) or Time (Album: The Dark Side of the Moon). I've decided Echoes because like all songs on The Dark Side of the Moon, Time functions best when played with the whole album. The annoying antique clocks within the first minute and the Breathe Reprise at roughly the last minute exemplify this. The clocks symbolize the theme of absurdity of the concept of time while the Breathe Reprise reinforces the seamlessness of the album. Echoes is the best stand-alone song. It's a rock epic with almost as much lyrics as Time (Echoes is 23:48 while Time is 7:06) which means it's mostly instrumental (I like instrumentals :] ). The first notes are hauntingly chilling, but sad. Rick Wright (keyboardist/pianist) and David Gilmour (lead guitarist) sing in harmony expressing a sense of unity. When I listen to it now, I can hear each instrument contributing to the song. When I was first listening to it, the wailing guitars startled me if had the volume low and wasn't expecting it (funny). It synchronizes with the final part of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. After the first two verses the music gets almost angry. After the wailing it goes into a long transformation back to the former intensity and even surpassing it with a climactic return to lyrics that give some hope. This is one of the few songs that Pink Floyd collaboratively wrote and fittingly so as Roger Waters described it as an attempt to express "The potential that human beings have for recognizing each other's humanity and responding to it, with empathy rather than antipathy." Yeah, I tried to dress up that blog with fancy schmancy words.
