When it says what I want it to say
by Cool Lennon on April 03, 2008It is a fact that every songwriter had something in mind when coming up with the lyrics to a tune, or just coming out with lyrics that were later put to music. But we must not forget that the clever and otherwise also just put phrases together to make them rhyme.
A line from Paul Simon's song "Kathy's Song" describes "words that tear and strain to rhyme" so one has to try and identify where a frivolous rhyme has been used rather than a whole sentence that makes sense.
Otherwise we go "Beautiful!" when the songwriter originally just thumbed his nose at us all.
The other side of that is when we read meanings into lyrics. Allowed of course but we have to distinguish what we see and what the songwriter meant.
I read these many comments on what "Suzanne" was all about. I refer of course to the Leonard Cohen song. And there it is, staring us in the face, his infatuation for a lady by the name. So, do some research before you add your comments. That will give this site some value.
