It's a little lonely, but at the same time very warm and sweet. Is he trying to tell us you've to make it a merry little Christmas for youself, (even) when no one else is going to make it a day of happiness? Or is he telling that Christmas makes all troubles far away and warm our hearts, even in times that aren't warm at all?

I think this song has got a lot of subjects in it. Not one particulairly. He is looking from two sides: in the evening and in the morning. For me, in the evening everything feels different than when in daylight. So I think he just want to make that feeling clear, with different possible thoughts and things in the mentioned evening (love, fear, loneliness).
