The Music Industry & The State of the Music Scene
by xoEmergencyTDM on March 21, 2008So I just downloaded a podcast yesterday through AP, and it featured underOATH, one of my favourite bands.
They went on talking about the music industry & everything, and how much & how drastically its’ changed. I mean honestly, you ask a lot of younger kids why they’re in a band and they won’t say it’s because they love music or they wanna write music. It’s because "Oh, i like being in a band." And now you have all these "new" bands that are just all starting to sound the same. A lot of them are modernized versions of bands from earlier years.
Tim was talking about some article he read in some magazine...and how each decade had their defining artist, the artist that pretty much defined that decade....The 80’s had Michael Jackson, 90’s was U2....and in the 2000’s....the closest thing we have is coldplay. Coldplay. I’m not against that band or anything, but what is going on? and if not coldplay...who else? Fall out boy? (I love fall out boy...i’m just making a point." And i took what they said about all the bands sounding a like and how there’s nothing NEW and how there’s no attempt in making something new...and it’s honest to god true, all these bands are starting to sound a like, not that i dont listen to those bands...because I do. And think about it...with all the songs we download or buy cds from bands, which ones are really going to stick out in our heads 5 years from now? Not many, I can promise you that. I have CD’s that i’ve bought 3 months ago that I can’t remember off the top of my head.
Another thing with the music industry is that kids now-a-day’s don’t understand the INDUSTRY aspect of it. Sure, when a band starts off they’re all about the music, and it’s like "oh okay, give us our bread & water, but make sure we have our music first." But people grow up, and when you grow up, that’s not your only main priority anymore. Some of these bands & musicians have Families & wives that they need to take care of first...and all of a sudden that fun little thing they had turns into a Job. And kids now are the first to scream "sellout" to a band who took an endorsement deal or who wanted to change their sound or do something different. Now tell me...if you had a job & you had an oppertunity to make more money for you and your family...you wouldn’t turn it down right? Didn’t think so.
Speaking of kids, there are so many what i like to call "elitists" out there now. You liked the band first, so that just makes you sooo much better than a kid who found out about them at a later time right? Wrong. If you’re a real fan and you like the band For their music, and not their appearence...then you’re a fan, no matter when you found out about them. And it really just pisses me off at the people who will to go a concert or go to a local show and just fucking stand there. Wow, you’re sooo cool with you’re "i’m so awesome that I’m not even going to fucking dance....or MOVE nonetheless at a band who’s giving their all in front of me to entertain me. So lets look super bored because that’s cool, and looking cool is all that matters." At every single concert I’ve been to, I’ve had at least ONE person complain that I was dancing around, or I was yelling too loud, or that I was "weird" because I jumped up and down to a song. OH GOD FORBID I SHOW MY SUPPORT. I’ve been in their place, it’s a hard place to be.
Another thing about kids, going along with the industry today, is that they sort of act like the band owes them something. They hunt down the band hand them a camera "TAKE PICTURE NOW" then hand them a sheet of paper "SIGN PAPER NOW" and just walk away. I mean hell...if I ever had a chance to have an encounter with a band I love & adore I’d try to talk to them because everyone forgets...these bands ARE REAL PEOPLE, and sure they may not always be in the mood to talk to people, but that’s something called being human...but really now...Stop acting liek they owe you something. And now their parents are getting involved. "I PAID $45 TO GET IN HERE AND YOU’RE GOING TO TAKE A PHOTO WITH/SIGNMY SON/DAUGHTER’s ____" Really now. That’s just absurd. It’s not only that, but it’s extrememly uncalled for. These people are away from their homes for months at a time, away from their children, their wives, their families...to entertain you and make YOU happy...and it just makes me so mad that The music industry has come to this.
END RANT.
