by madmolly on 04-14-2006 @ 03:35:23 PM Are our brains on holidays? If you look at "Holiday" and look at its references to society at large you can sort of step back from it like viewing, let's say, "That Seventies Show, " from a distance and see what THINGS were used to describe that time. The chorus: I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies This is the dawning of the rest of our lives On Holiday! The chorus usually imports a central meaning as does the title the last chorus line adds: This is our lives on holiday! To be on holiday, we don't take the news with us ... the radio, tv, cell phone etc. well at least that was the old school way of holiday. Does, "dream and differ," than refer to the, "American Dream?" now becoming different dreams, different somehow? If this was anti-American or even anti-Bush then the lyrics would not be talking about everything being off-key, like, "dogs howling off key," and "drum pounded out of time." Because this shows how both sides promilitary vs pacifism are off the mark, thrown off by propoganda that crosses lines like the protesters do and have done so in the past. The plastic gag refers to gag orders or censoring of news that is broadcast, like going on a holiday. Can I get another Amen? Amen! And the oiled machine of consensus of majority rolls on. Powered by gas .... President gasman refers to how gas was used not as a comparison for similarities between Bush and Hitler. Gas was used to kill those who threatened the ideal German state economy, use of oil/gas is motive for a grab for the goodies/resources which costs lives. "Setting fires" refers to anyone who considers themselves not part of the bigger picture that they are somehow outside the law, "because we're outlaws yeah!" I guess even outlaws can check out, go on holidays and be persuaded by society at large how to view things. Maybe we've all been sent on extended holidays away from the truth. Usually it is truth that is found to be hollow and empty, here it is the, "hollow lies." It's up to you to decide which lies are hollow, I guess.
