Bells. for Her.
by starshinesMonet on November 13, 2010I have always loved the significance of the title to this song ~ Bells. for Her.
I have read, and even understood as I heard a bell ringing, that bells signify the physical sound for the spiritual resonance and power that exists as possibility inside of us. That its sound is meant to call those possibilities out into the real, physical world.
They can also be used as a calling, a means of communication, an announcement (both for occasions of celebration and those of death), a warning or an alarm.
In ancient China where they were used to communicate directly with spirits*1, i.e. to alert evil spirits that an ancestor worship service was about to begin and they should flee*2,
I read in a forum once that their vibrations make the place clear - I liked that thought in relation to this song, that the bells would purify the space between these girls and allow for the rest of life to continue on.
For me, the 'portal' is the memory of their life together, all that past intimacy lost through time and change. As though the song were all these things, these bells of meanings, for her in the realm of significance to her dear friend. The one emotion that always resonated for me in this song was resignation - "can't stop what's coming/can't stop what's on its way." "there's nothing I can do." Like a bell, the sadness of that resignation struck and reverberated inside my heart and it seems like the bells are the friend's a method of communicating all of that resignation and unresolved sadness and pain between them.
