this is a really good website

  • so i found this site by looking for the lyrics to ben fold's five "brick" and i was blown away by how wrong i had interpretted the song to be. i usually pay attention to lyrics of songs- if a song's music is not so great but the lyrics are, i will put up with it or listen to it so many times that i get the hang of it. Often times i wonder about the meanings so this a great website! Of course sometimes i will refuse to accept the true meaning or sometimes i think my interpretation is the only right one- but isn't it so? I think all of art is subjective- and all these classes that teach us about the meanings of poems or meanings of paintings, etc are to some extent demeaning the very essence of art- in any form- written, sung, etc. I think the point of this is to form a subjective definition of what the artist intends- and to hear others opinions/ thoughts is a new outlook i never had and may be enlightening, but i think that ultimately i can never change my own view, or i should say, people shouldn't change their own view. I think this website reinforces the fact that one song may have many meanings according to who you ask. It is a paradox i guess- that a website called song meanings shows that there is no such thing- songs have no meanings because they can mean just about anything- just like life. Yes, life has no meaning either. So i guess we can say that the point of any song is to imitate life in its meaninglessness-- as you can see i have a knack for getting lost- this is also why i would suck as a lyricist- but for now, i will find myself another labrynthe. =)
