Well, I wanted to write this down before I forget completely, but I have decided on an major undertaking that must take place in Senate, with or without Nick's participation. I realized last night after talking to Roth that there is absolutely no way that there will be an effective student government on campus unless the two organizations are joined together. Now, the only thing that we can do now is establish communicaiton between the two organizations and then allow the importance of joint government to become known to both organizations. This is something that probably won't occur for a couple years, but this year we need to take baby steps toward cooperation. I think having joint forums on important issues that concern both bodies will prevent dissent between the two organizations. We need to start by meeting with Brent, Rachel, Elizabeth Brummett, myself, Abtine, and other concerned SG and Senate members. If senate realizes the importance of this matter, then there will not be a chair elected who doesn't carry this out. The same goes for SG. What an accomplishment it would be to have "Joint efforts with Senate" be part of SG's platform next year. I realize that there are strengths and weaknesses of both bodies but one cannot effectively function without the other. SG has student support most of the time because they appeal to the student who wants to "fight the man" and keep Administration in check. Some weaknesses is they usually don't have the support of administrators because Administrators would much rather take a student opinion that agrees with their own opinions. SG wastes a lot of time on resolutions that make administrators not take them seriously. SG also lacks some valuable student resources like direct contact with council presidents, reps and treasurers. Senate is a kiss-ass organization to administrators. We write resolutions in support of administration's decisions and when we do dissent, administrators laugh at us. We think that it is a victory when our resolutions are included in reports, but it is usually because we are kissing ass. We do have lots of valuable resources and lots of potential to get things accomplished. But we can't get these done on their own. Our connection to administration and SG's student support combined provide a powerful voice. Both organizations are on the extreme of how they feel about Administration and there needs to be a healthy balance between collaboration and debate with Administration. Administration doesn't respect either organization, but that can change. If they know that SG isn't constantly disagreeing just to disagree and Senate isn't being a pushover, then things can get done. I think leadership in both organizations is pessimistic and stubborn. This will be a challenge, but I believe that neither organization has a better method, they both are good at different things. Maybe we can gain respect from administration with a collaboration between the Id - SG and the Superego - Senate. Both organizations have begun to take issues just because they will cause hype. This is wrong, very wrong. We need to not just look like we are doing something but actually do something. I am tired of being a lame duck organization. That is not why I devote so much of my time to Senate.
Whew....
