Eventually, I grew to appreciate the vulnerability showcased in “Kaleidoscope Heart” that LV barely displayed. Don’t get me wrong, I know “Gravity”, “City”, and “Between the Lines” have a great deal of emotion behind them, but just listen and you’ll understand my reasoning. Obviously, the CD’s title gives away a taste of what you’ll experience: a “Kaleidoscope Heart” with a range of emotion that almost anyone can relate to. This album is somewhat more optimistic and less cynical than LV. Still, Sara never leaves her “Love Song” roots. Even in her moments of vulnerability, she tends to look ahead, and not back. Sara is not going keep painful memories from letting her live. I agree with people who say this album is a little more “feminine”, but hey, I’m cool with that! Here is the breakdown of each song:
1. Kaleidoscope Heart-only a minute long. A capella. Beautiful. Haunting. Perfect way to begin an Album such as this.
2. Uncharted (10/10)-LOVE! Easily my favorite song here (as many others would agree). I can definitely see why she decided to base the CD of off this. Love’s not about predictability. Life’s not either. Every moment you breathe, every second that passes, you tread on “uncharted” ground. Has “single” written all over it.
3. Gonna Get Over You(10/10)-deceptively upbeat, this song is simple, catchy, and WELL worth a listen. Bound to be a “single”.
4. Hold My Heart (9.5/10)-This is a song that I see Lenoa Lewis singing. Don’t ask me why. Melody wise, this is VERY different from the jazzy LV, but it’s still beautiful (and Lyrics obviously have the Sara touch).
5. King of Anything (9.5/10)-Very catchy. It resembles “Love Song” in many ways and releasing this song first was a smart choice.
6. Say You’re Sorry (10/10)-CATCHY. And the lyrics? GENIOUS. Probably my favorite, lyrically. Melody is slightly overproduced, but hey, I’m okay with that. This is a song that would be KILLER live.
7. The Light (9.5/10) – Haunting. Tense. Emotional. What more is there to say? It resembles “gravity” in a way with a very nice build up.
8. Basket Case (9/10) – Am I the only one who thinks this sounds a bit country? Surprisingly, I’m okay with that! The song is simple but that’s the beauty of it.
9. Let the Rain (9/10) – Very inspirational lyrics, and a great song! However I feel the melody is somewhat bland. Not my favorite, but definitely not one to miss out on either.
10. Machine Gun (10/10)-LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! At first I didn’t think the change from Verses to Chorus was done well, but a few more listens, and well…now this is one of my favorites in the CD. As you can tell.
11. Not Alone: (9/10)-Sounds dark! LOL. Could have fit well in “Little Voice”, but it makes a nice home here as “Kaleidoscope Heart’s” 11th track.
12. Breathe Again (8.5): Don’t ask me why, but I never could get into this particular song. It’s my least favorite. The song is beautiful, though, and a lot of other people seem to like it.
13. Bluebird (9/10) Wonderful way to end the CD. The journey continues on to “uncharted” lands where new life and love await.
