"Us and Them" song meaning

  • Although I think all of the ideas posted are plausible, when i first heard this song, i didnt get an impression about war, per se. I think a lot of the people who posted the beliefs about the song are on the right track, but i dont think that it's right. If Dark Side of the Moon is about a persons growth, and eventual descent into madness, i think the topic should have something to do with everyday life. I think the war references are used in a way, as they drugs were in "I did it" (by Dave Matthews Band). I think it's about a person becoming fed up with the workplace and the sort of routine fashion, and do as you're told attitude, that accompanies it (kind of like how soldiers automatically do as they're told by generals, being "killed", while they stay out of "harms way"). And that, even though this person hates going through this day in, day out, sort of lifestyle, he was forced into it to support himself, and because this late in life, there werent any other options. And when all of this becomes apparent to him, he can no longer take anymore, and thus slowly "Any Color You Like" and eventually "Brain Damage" begin.
