Christian Rock

  • thoughts on my journal? I'd love feedback, email me at lifelessordinary424@hotmail.com Ok, there is one thing about the music industry that I hate. I find a great band, I'm like "man, how did I not hear them before". I listen to them extensivly, search them on the web and BAM!! I find out that they're a Christian band. Ok, don't get me wrong here. I have absolutly nothing against Christians, god, etc., and of course they're totally allowed to have bands and listen to music (the same as god haters and athiests are allowed to have their bands!!) Its just that, I don't have any sort of deep love for god or anything, and the last thing I want to listen to is how he saves us and helps us etc. I know, I know. If it's good music, I should just listen to it, but I like to be able to relate to the music I'm listening to somehow, or AT LEAST not totally disagree with it, as is the case with Christian music. I'm told, on average, at least once a day, how much better my life would be if I had god in it, I don't need to have these beliefs shoved down my throat as well. Some bands are subtle enough so that, if I don't think about it (which, I admit, is hard) than I can listen to it (i.e. Switchfoot) Others are just too blatent to ignore (i.e. Flyleaf. This sucks because I like Flyleaf's music way better than I like Switchfoot). I know that its my fault that I cant just listen to this music, and I'm not "dissing" the band, they totally have the right to express their love for their god, I just get too hung up over listening to something I flat out disagree with. The thing that ultimatly gets to me, and the whole reason I felt compelled to write this, is when music promoters such as MTV and iTunes promote these bands without mentioning that they are Christian music. A couple months ago, iTunes free single of the week was "Blush (Only You)" by the Christian band Plumb. I just found out today that they were Christian rock. I feel offended by this because I'm posative iTunes would never give, for example, "Judith" by A Perfect Circle away (the lyrics are basically: "fuck your god, your christ, he did this to you, still you pray, never stray, never thought to question why"). I can't help but feel slighted because, even though I don't hate god strongly like that, I feel like only one side of the spectrum is being shown here. I know "Blush (Only You)" isnt about god specifically (I'm actually just assuming this, but I sort of hope not because the lyrics mention kissing more than once). And, even if it is about god, its not upfront about it, still, it would lead people back to this band (they are a pretty good band by the way, if you don't mind the more-than-occasional god referance) and the whole Christian aspect bites you in the ass. My complaint is mainly, that, as I mentioned before, I feel slighted. I feel like my beleifs aren't being fairly represented in society. The thing is, if someone were to promote a song such as the one by A Perfect Circle, the complaints would pour in and ultimatly it would be another reason for Christians to bitch abou the whole "attack on Christianity" thing (total bullshit by the way, but thats a rant for another time). Its really sad that our society has gotten like this. What with the ban on gay marriges and abortion, the idea of seperation of church and state is just that: an idea, and not one that anyone feels like we should take seriously either. And the fact that iTunes would just throw that band out there on the free single (which a whole lot of people get into) without even mentioning that the majority of their songs are about how some god who is totally awesome and merciful (and who will let you suffer for all eternity if you don't follow him...) should be YOUR god, 'cause he's gonna save you (just like he's saving the world...see what a bang up job he's done?). I know this isnt such a big deal, but think of it as the rosary that broke the athiest's back.
