When evening falls
She'll run to me
Like whispered dreams
Your eyes can't see

Soft and warm
She'll touch my face
A bed of straw
Against the lace

We believed we'd catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder

But life's not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me

Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn

We believed we'd catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
And sail away on ships of wonder

But life's not a wheel
With chains made of steel
So bless me, oh bless me, bless me

Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn
Come the dawn

Ronnie James Dio explains in a 1975 radio special

"Catch the rainbow is lyrically medieval in that it's concerning a stable boy who makes it with a lady of the court. She sneaks off to sleep on his bed of straw every night and they think it's all going to work but as we rudely find out, it never does and they kind of go their own way, but it's a track that I think Ritchie and I are very proud of."

I think many of you are very close, and have found very valid meanings in this song. Which is just as good as what I am to present. While I cannot give a source, I remember an interview where Ronnie James Dio explained the meaning behind the song. His inspiration for it was a princess and a stableboy falling in love, which fits perfect with the lines:

"A bed of straw Against the lace"

After all, a straw bed is something a poor person would have been sleeping on, while lace is a fabric only rich people could afford in any historical age. As you can see from the chorus, they would eventually be torn apart by the different worlds they belonged to.

Then again, and I cannot stress this enough, there is not enough information in the song lyrics to get what the real story is, so like with many of his songs, Ronnie wanted us to find our own meaning in it. Therefore, the opinions presented here are just as valid as what Ronnie originally came up with.

I don't have an idea about what does this song mean....but I think it's about high hopes in somethings .... : we believed we'd catch the rainbow but finally, life isn't that easy : life's a chains made with steel.. GREAT GREAT song, I have the live one it's like 10 minutes long and Ritchie Blackmore (the guitarist) plays a 3 minute solo, great song.

    My Interpretation

I LOVE THIS SONG 2 DEATH ITS SO BEAUTIFUL, THE WORDS, THE VOICE & THE MUSIC! AS WITH ANY RAINBOW SONG WITH DIO & BLACKMORE BEHIND THE LYRICS, I DON'T GET ANY IMPRESSION THAT THIS SONG HAS ANY KIND OF DEEP MEANING OR SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE. I SIMPLY THINK, LIKE MANY OF THERE OTHERS IT IS SIMPLY A FANTASTICAL STORY PUT 2 MUSIC. IN MY OPINION, GENIUS. I THINK THIS STORY IN PARTICULAR IS ABOUT A PAIR OF MEDIEVAL ILLICIT LOVERS. (WHEN EVENING FALLS SHE'L RUN 2 ME) SUGESTING THAT THE MEETING MUST BE DONE IN SECRET UNDER COVER OF NIGHT FALL. MY REASONING BEHIND WHY I THINK THEY HAVE TO HIDE THERE LOVE IS BECAUSE SHE IS PROBABLY A PRINCESS OR AT LEAST A WEALTHY WOMAN (I LIKE 2 BELIEVE A PRINCESS) & HE IS A STABLE BOY. (A BED OF STRAW UNDERNEATH THE LACE) LACE BEING FROM THE WOMANS DRESS WHICH ONLY THE RICH WOULD HAVE. THEY HAD ALL THESE DREAMS THAT 1 DAY THEY COULD B 2GEATHER & ACHIEVE ANYTHING. (WE BELIEVED WE'D CATCH THE RAINBOW....ETC-METAPHOR) BUT UNFORTUNATELY LIFE IS NOT THAT SIMPLE & THINGS NEVER RUN SMOOTHLY, NOTHING IS GUARANTEED.(BUT LIFES NOT A WHEEL WITH CHAINS MADE OF STEEL) I INTERPRET THE LINE "BLESS ME COME THE DAWN" 2 B THE STABLE BOY LITERALY SAYING "GOD HELP ME IN THE MORNING" BECAUSE HE DOESNT WANT 2 B FOUND WITH HIS RICH LOVER AS HE KNOWS SHE WILL B TAKEN AWAY FROM HIM & HE WILL MOST LIKELY B MURDERED & POSSIBLY SO WILL SHE 4 CAUSING SUCH SHAME. TONI IOMMI PERFORMED THIS AT RONNIE JAMES DIO'S FUNERAL. GOD BLESS U RONNIE!

I think that the Catch the Rainbow lyrics may be about high hopes, as dylanrocks has said, but high hopes gone unfulfilled. I really like this song very much. It's so calm compared to their other hard rockin' songs. The group's ability to create both types of songs successfully is what makes them so awesome.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
