It's in the way you caress my face
Like you always used to
But differently
We can smile to hide the shame
Here in the pouring rain
Waiting for the sun

I'm crying all alone
Standing next to you
You have done your best to see it through
But, oh, baby

I can tell
By the way that you love me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning out
Oh, baby, I can tell
By the way that you hold me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning out

Moving down an open road
Asking our hearts for direction
Cause were so close
I can see the faded signs
Leading to the same destination
But you're not there

We're dancing to the music
That ended long ago
You've done everything that you can do
But, oh, baby

I can tell
By the way that you love me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning out
Oh, baby, I can tell
By the way that you hold me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning out

Oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I, oh I

My heart is in the wind
Drifting over you
I've done everything that I can do

Oh, baby, I can tell
By the way that you love me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning out
Oh, baby, I can tell
By the way that you hold me
Oh, I can tell
That the fire is burning
Fire is burning out

I can tell
By the way that you love me
I can tell
That the fire is burning out

I can tell
By the way that you hold me
I can tell
That the fire is burning out [Repeat]

Its about a couple that is drifting apart after being together for a long time. Things have changed and they are not headed in the same direction anymore. Their relationship has faded away

I just heard this song on the TV, and I had to go check for the lyrics. This is exactly how I feel right now...Not with a boyfriend, but with a friend.

Hmm.. what I like about this song, is that when they sing 'I can tell, that the fire's burning out', it's all breathy, like they are running out of breath like the guy and girl are running out of love, or like they are blowing out a candle. (Fire burning out..) But maybe that's just me. ;)

Anyway, I'm not sure about the specific meaning of this song. Of course it's about a relationship that has 'run its course', as the saying goes, but it's more complex than that. It's like... they both want to save the relationship, but the guy isn't sure that's possible. In her life, the girl is moving in a different direction, even if on the outside it seems that they are the same. They act like everything is the same, that nothing has changed.. but it isn't the same. They are holding on to something that started dying long ago, and they aren't sure what to do with it. That's how I see it, anyway.
