S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it
S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it
Let's go

I've had enough
There's a voice in my head
Says I'm better off dead

But if I sing along
A little fucking louder to a happy song
I'll be alright

You want to give up
Gave it all that you've got and it still doesn't cut

But if you sing along
A little fucking louder to a happy song
You'll be just fine 'cause

Every now and again we get that feeling
And the great big void inside us opens up
And I really wish that you could help
But my head is like a carousel
And I'm going round in circles
I'm going round in circles

S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it
S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it

We are possessed
We're all fucked in the head
Alone and depressed

But if we sing along
A little fucking louder to a happy song
Maybe we'll forget 'cause

Every now and again we get that feeling
And the great big void inside us opens up
And I really wish that you could help
But my head is like a carousel
And I'm going round in circles
I'm going round in circles

Don't wake us up, we'd rather just keep dreaming
'Cause the nightmares in our heads are bad enough
And I really wish that you could help
But my head is like a carousel
And I'm going round in circles
I'm going round in circles

The world has coalesced
Into one giant mess
Of hate and unrest
So let's all sing along
A little goddamn louder to a happy song
And pretend it's all ok

Let's go

So let's sing along
Yeah, let's sing along
A little fucking louder
A little fucking louder
Well, don't you feel so much better?

S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it (well, that's the spirit)

S-P-I-R-I-T
Spirit, let's hear it (yeah, that's the spirit)

I love this song so much! Bit off topic, but has anyone heard of the band FROM INSIDE?? Well I read on Twitter that Oli Sykes and Jordan Fish have written all the music for them cos they are good friends in the UK. Check out their music video for their single BE YOURSELF - FROM INSIDE by searching on Youtube, it sounds very BMTH but still its ridiculous good obviously. Mad that they are doing this too for friends bands now, really love them :D

    My Interpretation

I like your interpretation. I have to think of people who want to cheer you up while you're being depressed. They don't really get how it's like and say things like: 'you just have get out more' and 'meet your friends' and 'listen to happy songs'. He sings about accepting the help but they don't really know how they can help him.

    My Interpretation

I think yhis song is obviously a sarcsstic view about the "that's the spirit" expressions, meaning that people who don't have depression and therefore don't understand it think it's easy to just "get out of it", so they say things like "that's the spirit!", "cheer up, dude" or in this case, "just simg along to a happy song". I remember seeing in an interview with Oli and the band saying that was the whole concept of the album, which I think is explicit in this song particularly. Also, the use of a "happy song" in general may be referring to Pharrel Williams "Happy", because people sing along to that happy song and pretend it's all ok, that the world has coalesced into one giant mess of hate and unrest.

I think it's about getting through hard times, and getting something good out of them. I wish I could put it more poignantly, but that's what I think. There's an interview on YouTube with Oli Sykes talking about the album, and he sort of hinted at this. Love this song.

    My Interpretation

I think this song is telling us that everybody has felt depressed and sad in some moment of their lives. We all go through them no matter how serious they are. But we (or at least I'm guilty of it) brush them off because we convince ourselves that there are people with worse problems than ours. We keep it inside, push all those "negative" emotions down, hold in the anger, dream to forget the nightmare... These little moments of sadness keep piling up until they burst on the most unexpected of moments or they make us bitter, make wrong decisions, etc. Aaaaand that's why "The world has coalesced into one giant mess of hate and unrest." because we decide to "...sing along a little fucking louder to a happy song." Of course, this is just my interpretation and it's probably lacking a lot of details... But yeah...

    Song Meaning

This song is all about picking your chin up and making the best of a bad situation, which is actually the theme of the whole album (hence the title). The lyrics are telling the audience to understand that, even though things could be better, everything will work out in the end.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
