The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
welcome's more than been wore out
soon become too desperate
but what good comes to those who wait
at it now so many years
chase and hope to catch a break
rattled out and off the rails
so many places
still only know
those all met back home
but we don't really talk much anymore
twenty one years old
and it's weighing down
twenty one years old
and we're moving out
always loyal to a fault
bitter towards the ones who left
but they'd return to open arms
grew up all so similar
why were things different
when all wrapped up and we moved away
so many places
still only know
those all met back home
and we don't really talk much anymore
twenty one years old
and it's weighing down
twenty one years old
and we're falling out
twenty one years old
and we're so damn lost
twenty one years old
we once belonged to you
something must be wrong
they've all up and gone
they've all up and gone
(x4)
they've all up and gone
