So I’ve been through a lot of fire
White with hate, blue with desire
I grew up fast and I grew up alone
And now that I am older, I feel a little weaker
But I’m strong enough at least to take you home

Andrew, let’s run from the city
Our friends all got stuck here
Our blood will go gray either way
And even jobs here cost money
We’ll make it as prophets if only we learn how to play
Remember her bending her big blue eyes all over you?
Of course you do!
But check out the glow from the third row
Sure, I’ll give you the keys
And you can take your pretty victory home

The night we rose up you were rotten, girl
You dressed up in gold, you held onto your drink like a knife
â€There’re certain things left unsaid,â€ you said
Well, I guess I’d forgotten I blew like a storm through your life
To see you lifted from the smoke I’d wade any water
So just come live with me outside this city
I don’t know where we are
But I’m sure that somehow we’ll get home

There are people I know but I don’t know, no
Lynn, how’s your mother? And where did your friend put the car?

A girl with a ribcage of roses
Offered me comfort, but I couldn’t offer these arms

Sarah, you’re cute but you’re druggy
We can’t travel the world, but I’m glad I at least took you home

Looks like your wound is fatal, but I’m all right
Now that you’re not part of my plans tonight
You pull those shades down tight right across your eyes
Oh, did you think that I was joking like your other guys?

So I twist and tremble in pale green light
And you will not be part of my plans tonight
I took you for a common criminal
Oh, how was I to know that you were a professional?

So you can leap back at me with all your might
But you will not be part of my plans tonight
I laid the rails and I am spouting steam
And I'll be holding out my fingers in your next blue dream

Yes, I’m temporary, but I’m all right
And you will not be part of my plans tonight
I had some hope for you and I told you so
But you told me to get going, so my darling, I am ready to go

Step
Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
