Are they laughing "at or with me"
Oh, baby those are such great shoes
And I think that I'm so happy now
And I think this is a better you

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Are they laughing at or with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Why can't we just say what we mean

People are just trying to fit in
But is there something telling you
You can't trust anyone in this town
Oh, baby those are such great shoes

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Are they laughing at or with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Why can't we just say what we mean

Don't put your money where your mouth is baby
We don't want to see you choke
Nobody's joking around here anymore
Nobody's broking any high scores
No dancing shoes have touched these dusty floors
For such a long long time
For such a long long time
For such a long time

Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Are they laughing at or with me
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Why can't we just say what we mean

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh

This song always makes me so happy. I think it's about being happy with who you are. No matter who's shoes you're wearing, "taking a walk in someone's shoes", we should just be content and happy and we shouldn't let other people's opinions change ours.

    My Interpretation

I love this song. I see it to be all about honesty, and being yourself. finding people who like you for you, who laugh with you, not at you. Not everyone is going to like you, but a lot will.

I think the song is about trying to figure out whether people in your life are enjoying your prescence or your presents, to be punny.

This is such a fun catchy tune! I’m no expert, but here is my take on the lyrics. I think this is another one of those songs where jack is saying that the most important thing for a lot of people is to fit in with the majority of society.

Are they laughing at or with me Ah baby those are such great shoes And I think that I’m so happy now And I think this is a better you Are they laughing at or with me Why can’t we just say what we mean

I think he is trying to say that the question: “Are they laughing at or with me?” is the only question some people bother to ask themselves. People in the world, especially in America, end up conforming into something they are not because they think that life is only about fitting in and finding pleasure in material things(which is kind of force fed to us through television and main-stream music). And I feel like jack is talking from one of the fore-mentioned people’s point of view in this song. It is as if he is asking himself “are they laughing at or with me?” and quickly tries to compliment a pair of shoes that the "cool" people think are "cool" to make him appear to be “cool” because he thinks that is what is going to give him happiness. At the end of the chorus he asks the question “Why can’t we just say what we mean?” And that is such a great question. Why can’t we just be accepted for saying or being what WE actually believe in rather than trying to be like everyone else? What if I don’t think those shoes are great?... Anyways, That is just my take, kind of unsure about the bridge I would like to hear what someone thinks about it.

I think that the song is about lying to people, and telling them what they want to hear. It's similar to what Jackmumfews said, about people thinking that fitting in is more important, but it's about being liked. You tell people what they want to hear because everybody has such a thin skin anymore. I share Jack's view of the situation - I'm not going to lie to you, I'm going to say just what I mean. If those shoes are ugly, I'm going to tell you that they're ugly shoes. Apparently, that means that I'm a jerk according to most people.

This is also one of the few songs where Jack is talking poorly about a girl: Oh baby.. = to girl ...great shoes = lie I'm so happy now = lie I think this is a better you = LIE

The second verse is more about society in general, and it starts with the same kind of subverted message, Don't put your money where your mouth is... = sarcasm, 'putting money where your mouth is' is the opposite of trash talking. He's saying that everybody says what they'll do, but they never go off and really go for it. ...we don't want to see you choke = 'Choke' as in mess up, drop the ball, fail, whatever. People are so afraid of people laughing AT them, that they won't risk new experiences anymore because they're afraid they might look silly/stupid in front of someone. Just like the shoes, is it really such a big deal?

Nobody's joking / no dance shoes = nobody wants to have fun these days. Most people lack the confidence to dance in public (grinding doesn't count, it's what people do because they can't really dance), so they don't dance anymore. Nobody's broken high scores = same as the 'money where your mouth is'. Nobody wants to try to push themselves to new heights, because they're afraid of failure.

As nice and fun as this song is, it's sort of Jack's way of being a drill-sergeant to the world. Saying "hey everyone - stop worrying about what we think about you, you're not that important. Just live your life and be happy."

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
