I want to cut through my skin
And pull you within
My heart burns like the sun
As our flesh becomes one

In the darkness, my heart aches at the sight of you
Trembles and quakes within sight of you
In the darkness

Our bodies burning, tides are turning, somehow stopping time
What is becoming of my heart and mind?

In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live
In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live

I will surrender my sin
And give you control
Make me a martyr for love
Till the habits abide

In the darkness, my heart aches at the sight of you
Trembles and quakes within sight of you
In the darkness

Our bodies burning, tides are turning, somehow stopping time
What is becoming of my heart and mind?

In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live
In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live

In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live
In the darkness, all that you want from me, is all I have to give
In the darkness, coming so easily, learning how to live

I love this song! This is an ultimate passion song when you feel that uncontrollable desire towards someone and you just want to spend all night making love to that person and lose yourself in passion.

"I wanna cut through my skin and pull you within." I thought it was "pour you within" not pull you within but I’m not sure. There is nothing negative about this bit — it’s just about desire and wanting to feel the other person throughout. You want to feel him/her as close as possible and you just wish you could pour them within your blood to feel satisfied.

"What is becoming of my heart and mind" — I think this is the bit where you are starting to wonder whether you are completely falling for this person and it’s not just physical passion anymore. This is an amazing song, one of my favourites from the album.

    My Interpretation

Where's the opening line? "I wanna cut through my skin / and pull you within." Anyway, I love this song! I actually think it's about the writer having an affair or cheating on a significant other and they're singing to the outside lover.

"My heart burns like the sun / as our flesh becomes one" is probably sex, the moment they start doing it, lol. The heart burning is probably how wrong the infidelity feels.

"My heart aches at the sight of you / trembles and quakes within sight of you / in the darkness" makes me think that.

Also, "make me a martyr for love / 'til the habits abide" and "I will surrender my sin."

Plus Chester sings, "what is becoming of my heart and mind?" Like he didn't make the right decision in cheating or having the affair (mind) and he's becoming callous and cold (heart).

It comes through to me to be about two lovers surviving in the "darkness" which probably represents suffering of the world around them. Chester mentions lines of both joy and suffering when with the "you" of the song, in the "darkness." The martyr part is about either through joy or suffering lover gives Chester faith, to survive/trust in their love in the "darkness." That's my take on it.

    i like this song.

its obviously about "making love" in the dark. im assuming its about his wife. i dont necessarily think its about cheating. Out of Ashes is about chesters new life. becoming a new person. its pretty much all positive

    My Interpretation

yeah i think this song is about sex between 2 people who love each other but the love sounds all consuming. There's a kind of sadness about the song too almost like the man is tormented in some way and emotionally clinging to the girl xxxx

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines: "Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet" So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other: "I had all and then most of you" Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart "Some and now none of you" Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship. This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
