Once upon a time, before the lakes and rivers were polluted
Before the animals were poached to extinction
And before man had destroyed the earth's atmosphere
There was a great ship
This vessel was to venture into new waters
To find new resources to make life easier and more enjoyable
It was a simple mission for the crew, who were excited to be a part of this union
They pledged their allegiance to the captain and vowed to be there no matter what
In sickness, health, and possible death
As time passed by, there was no new land to be found
As the days grew shorter
And the nights grew longer and colder
The crew became more and more skeptical about the captain's vision
Originally passionate and committed to being true and faithful, they now began to revolt

You crossed the line
I was honest and never promised anything
Just a brotherhood to stand for something
And everyone should take the lead
Follow your dreams
If you don't try you fail

And we started
And the captain went over
He asked them why
Their lives had changed
There's no gold to be found
No treasure in the ground
We won't die for this
We won't die for you

You've lost your mind
I was honest and never promised anything
Just a brotherhood to stand for something
And even if they disagree
Follow your dreams
If you don't try, you fail

His dream is now
A shipwreck in the sand
They gave up
Then made all their demands
The storm consumed
57 souls
Died in vain
His love they stole

This union, a battle fought and lost
This union was not about the cause
This union was never about love
This union, this union

This union, a battle fought and lost
This union was not about the cause
This union was never about love
This union, this union

This union, a battle fought and lost
This union was not about the cause
This union was never about love

Actually, this may be the title track of A Shipwreck In The Sand, but it really isn't apart of the main story line. The beggining, th part in quotation marks is a story that the man guy is reading to his daughter, the "You crossed the line, I was honest I never promised anything...." is part of the main story; The man starts his house on fire in a attept to kill his daughter and wife, but couldn't go threw with it an saves their life. After moving into a hotel the wife starts cheating on the husband with his best friend. Filled with regreat the husband starts drinking, realizing he has a problem. And he's angry because his wife isn't thankful he saved her life and burns down his x-wife an best friends home, killing the best friend. In the process getting his child taken away, and blamd for arision.

its about creating a band (the brotherhood). But them not getting anywhere. The Captian who im guessing would be the singer or the band founder. Follow your dreams, because if you don't try, you fail. So if you dream of being a musician and becoming famous but dont try, you basically fail. Which Silverstein did, they tried and didnt fail showing that it is possible.

Then the rest of the song is about the band starting to get uneasy because they arent getting the fame that the founder thought they would.

The new resources they were searching for to make life easier and more enjoyable would be the money they would get from the fame.

"You've lost your mind I was honest and never promised anything Just a brotherhood to stand for something And even if they disagree Follow your dreams If you don't try, you fail"

"You've lost your mind" "I was honest I never promised anything, Just a band to stand for something Follow your dreams of being famous If you don't try, you fail"

You're wrong, this has nothing to do with the band.

"This union, a battle fought and lost" - so you're saying they "lost"? No, they didn't.

    My Interpretation

    Okay, so here's my theory:

This song goes along with the general story of the album as a reference to the whole general idea of the story, just in a different time period. Betrayal. Greed. All of the aspects of the over all story of the album, but sort of in the form of a story book. Which is my point. I think that this song is a book that the main character is reading to his child (daughter, I believe), sort of like a bedtime story. This would make sense as it only places references to the main story, but doesn't actually mention the main characters. He want's to show his daughter what he's going through, but put it in a more epic bedtime story.

But anyways, just my speculation. Open to all interpretation.

    Song Meaning

This song, to me, is talking about how people can put so much trust in someone, or a leader. But all along that leader is corrupt, or crazy, and you turn on them because you know that there is nothing out there or nothing to be gained.

This is song is simply amazing. Silverstein made another great, epic song just like "Discovering The Waterfront." This song has so many meanings. The first part is the overview of what is occurring and a little bit of what is happening today in life. The second part is about the Captain telling the crew the consequences of the journey and what to expect. The third part is about the crew giving up on the journey. So they betray their Captain, by locking the Captain up. When the Captain asks why, it seems that the crew became impatient about no being able to find anything. They gave up on the Captain. The fourth part is the crew, or the Captain, saying "You've lost your mind. The Captain tells the crew that he stated "I was honest and never promised anything..," from the beginning. The Captain also tells the crew that if they don't follow their dreams, they'll fail, but they seem reluctant. The fifth part states that the Captain's dreams are over because the crew gave up. It also states that the crew died with the Captain, taking away the Captain's love for life. The last part talks about how the union was never with the Captain's dream, the cause.

And also it's not just about the money and fame, its about doing what you dream of and standing for something, which only the captain could see.

I understand that each song on this album is apart of a bigger story but I'm pretty sure this particular song is about a failed marriage in which one of the partners simply didn't try to save it and gave up.

"...excited to be a part of this union." - I tend to consider union to be more aptly applied to a marriage than a crew.

"They...vowed to be there no matter what, in sickness, health, and...death." - This is straight out of a marriage ceremony.

"As time passed by, there was no new land to be found. As the days grew shorter, and the nights grew longer and colder, the crew became more and more skeptical about the captain's vision." - This sounds like a marriage that is drifting apart.

"Originally passionate and committed, true and faithful, they now began to revolt." - "Passionate", "Committed", "Faithful", this person has fallen out of love and is revolting by stepping out on the marriage.

"He asked them why Their minds had changed There's no gold to be found No treasure in the ground We won't die for this We won't die for you" - metaphor

"if you don't try, you fail" - giving up on the marriage

"This union, a battle fought and lost This union was not about the cause This union was never about love This union, this union" - bla bla bla, you get what I'm saying

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
