When I was a child
I toyed with dirt
an I fought
As a child
I killed the slugs I bored with a bough
in their spiracle
When I was a child
peers pushed me hard
In my head
In my neck
in my chest
in my waist
in my butt
I still beg
please help me

When I was a child
I threw with dung as I fought
As a child, I killed all thugs
and I bored with a bough
In their spiracle
When I was a child
foes pushed me hard
In my
In my neck
in my chest
in my waist
in my butt
I still beg
please help me

When I was a child
I rend my tongue, distraught
As a child
I killed my thoughts
and bored with a bough
In my spiracle
When I was a child
Fears pushed me hard in my head
In my neck
in my chest
in my waist
I never loved
I still beg
please help me

When I was a child
I bred a whore in my heart
A stillborn child
I gasp for -
The devil into my spiracle

I was a child
I was a child
I am a child

    My Interpretation

I really love this song, but I'm not yet sure about its meaning... if she was really abused as a child by some bullies or anything...

hmm... the lyrics are very intense, that's for sure!

Anja was bullied a lot in her childhood because she was so different. I think that is what this song is about. I read an article about it. Poor girl...

It is about life-long unwanted brooding overwhelming desire to fight whole world, or yourself, or anything and about being beaten in return. I have such desire too, so it crystaly clear for me.

    Song Meaning

the pain you can feel when you're a chilld, and they tell you horrible things or beat you, or bother you in such ways you are completely destroyed inside.

You're screaming for help, but you can't use your mouth, however, nobody seems to note that you need help. You're completely alone, a harmful solitude. So you live your enterly life in a painful silence, a big hole of wounds.

    Excuse my english.

I'm fairly new to Soap&Skin, but I'm already completely in love with it, this song in particular. I don't know a lot about Anja (I don't think anyone really does), but she seems to be a very troubled person. She said in one interview that she was bullied very badly as a child in school, and I read somewhere that when she was young she would kill snails out of anger at one of her parents, but I'm not sure how true that is. I think this is a very personal song to Anja, about the cruelty she suffered at the hands of other children. If it's not that, it could very well be about the cruelty of children in general. People say children are innocent, but really they can be exceptionally cruel. They do it out of curiosity without realizing the damage they are doing, whether it be to animals or other people.

Well one may link this to awful experiences in one's childhood, but it seems that the repetition of patterns through the paragraphes rather highlights the notion of trauma encountered by children under 10-12, than the reason of trauma. Under that age, children lack cognitive development that helps them to rationalise painful experiences (and I'm absolutely not reducing the effet that rape might have on a child) the brain prefers to push away, to forget, to put aside. This experience influences your whole affective and cognitive development, and may give an impression of "a child grown up too fast" or "an adult who isn't grown out". And that seems to be expressed by the last sentence.

We all (more or less) bare some kind of emotional or physical burden from our childhood. We all blustered at someone and we all were blustered by someone. In many cases people bully inferior ones and are bullied by superior ones. When I was a child I rend my tongue, distraught. Some people lack self confidence and dont say what they have to say which is too frustrating and can easily make them deeply agitated. All this can make someone engender into an introvert malevolent person. <3 love the song

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
