This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
(Ladies on the floor)
(All my ladies on the floor) gettin' bodied
(If you ready, get it ready) gettin' bodied
(Let's get it and drop it) hey
Give it up for my sister!
All right now
Everybody put your hands together
Do we have any single ladies in the house tonight?
(Now put your hands up) sing
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies (All the single ladies)
All the single ladies
Now put your hands up
Up in the club (club)
Just broke up (up)
I'm doing my own little thing
You decided to dip (dip)
But now you wanna trip (trip)
'Cause another brother noticed me
I'm up on him (him)
He up on me (me)
Don't pay him any attention
I cried my tears (tears)
For three good years (years)
You can't be mad at me
'Cause if you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don't be mad once you see that he want it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh (whoa, oh, oh)
'Cause if you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don't be mad once you see that he want it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Now wait
I want y'all to get nice and stanky with me
Where I'm from
We do things nice and stanky
We do things nice and funky (alright y'all)
Can y'all repeat after me
You ready? Say
Hey-ay (hey-ay)
Hey ay-ay (hey ay-ay)
Hey-ay (hey-ay)
Hey ay-ay (hey ay-ay)
Hey-ay (hey-ay)
Hey ay-ay (hey ay-ay)
Hey-ay-yeah (hey-ay-yeah)
Hey-ay-ay (hey-ay-ay)
Now wait
You still ain't stankin' enough for me
Say whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(Sing) whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh (put your hands up)
Say whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
(Where my ring at?)
Oh, oh, oh, oh-oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Sing (whoa, oh, oh)
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it
Don't be mad once you see that he want it (I see you)
If you like it, then you shoulda put a (ring on it)

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
You're all wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Listen again, and you will clearly hear her sing, "All the single LETTUCE."
It's about lonely salad.
I would totally put an onion ring on it. Poor lettuce.
What 😂🤣😂😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂😂 😂🤣🤣🤣
It is obvious what this song means. It is about how she is now with another man, engaged/married and her ex boyfriend is jealous. She is saying that he can't be mad because not only could he not give her what she needed (real love) but he didn't propose any commitment (didn't put a ring on it). Someone else did. Too bad, so sad.
Me and my friend think that this song has a hidden dedication to Mario and Princess Peach.
You can clearly hear throughout the song that there is a similar sound to when Mario Jumps in the game. We think that Beyonce is trying to suggest that after all these years Mario and Peach should finally get married. This would also mean that Mario wouldn't have to be so worried about Bowser any more because We're sure that he wouldn't try and kidnap and romance a married woman.
[We're deadly serious]
=]
I think the ring is a symbol for commitment, not just exclusively marriage. It's basically a song with the message that if you like a person but won't commit to them because you still want to get with other people, the tables might turn and you might end up being the lonely one.
Don't you people ever think that some songs are just written for fun. You know, sheer enjoyment? I do love songs that deep, and make you really think. Everybody just loves a song that tears at the heart strings and makes them feel emotions that they rarely feel. But, on the other hand, why be so serious? Just because, Beyonce isn't out there singing about some type of love she has for someone/something or singing about politics, doesn't make this a bad song. The point is, if that man really wanted her, he would have stayed. Regaurdless of giving her a ring or not. It is what the ring is representing.
Not to mention, if you don't like this song, you most likely do not like Beyonce. Why you even bothered to search lyrics and post nonsense is beyond me. Now, that is truly pathetic.
I think I can pinpoint for you why people care - because this song is not just sending a vibe of enjoyment into the world, it's not just about dancing or having friends or loving life - it's sending a message to thousonds of young, impressionable people that superificial, materialistic commitment is the only thing that is important. It's addressing it as if all women need and want this ring and that form of commitment!

As for saying "f that man really wanted her, he would have stayed. Regaurdless of giving her a ring or not."... well where in the song does it say this? It doesn't say who left who, but it does seem to address the issue that if she had gotten a ring out of it, she would have stayed... to me it's giving off the impression that she left because she didn't get the ring.

I'm all for songs that are just for fun, I seem to remember seeing an early interview with Lady Gaga about 'Just Dance' saying that there needed to be more fun loving, pure pop songs, just meant for dancing and making you feel good rather than their meaning. The problem with this song is that it masquerades as a fun pop song but it has a more deep, harmful message which leaves a lot of girls singing IF YOU LIKE IT THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE PUT A RING ON IT... thinking that marriage is the only form of communication. It's not empowering in the slightest like lots of people think, its just another song where feminism has gone wrong.
this song is definitly about halo 3. it was not beyonce, but the forerunners who originally thought of a super ring which could destroy planets. do not be deceived by her lies. she may also tell you that you get recon armour for a con-splatter (another example of her witchcraft and spellcasting). also people, the rings have been destroyed. i made sure of that yesterday while playing the campaign on ledgendary (the grunt birthday party skull was on...HARDCORE!!!!) CTS REP
I object to the idea that if he wanted to keep her he should have proposed. He should have (both of them, actually) worked to fix the problems in the relationship. If it was simply that it wasn't real love, then why would she even have said yes?
i don't like this song, but he video's even worse.what' with the bionic hand shit?al she does is say the same three hings ver and over.she an do better, and i don't get how this one hs gotten a vide when others haven't.she's obviously talented, but this song is just horrendous
K I like this song its catchy. The meaning is what everyone is saying. But the way I percieve it is single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) You can also take it as in if your single who cares if you dont got a man. Put a ring to show your single. put a ring on it.
This song is the worst song ever. I was on my bus and they played it like 20 times in a row and I wasnted to shoot myself in the head. Everything aboout it suckss, god beyonce is sooooo annoying!
This song is worthless. Why is putting a ring on it such a big deal anyway? Like it's a big prize. Any woman who only wants that rock probably isn't worth having. Jay-Z is probably kicking himself. Okay, she is incredibly sexy, so maybe not yet. But he will be. Anyway, the point is, the guy in the song probably didn't put a ring on it because he knew she was a gold digger, and wanted him to spend his money on the sweat of diamond miners.
