Singing a song with your feet on the dashboard
The cigarette streaming into the night
These are the things that I want to remember
I want to remember you by

It won't come again
'Cause love is the end
Oh no, my friend
Love is the end

I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean
Looking for somewhere to start anew
And when I was drowning in that lonely water
All I could think of was you

Whoa, my friend
Love is the end
So lets not pretend
'Cause love is the end

Take it back, don't let it die
Or raise again the fallen night
'Cause I still do, depend on you
So don't say those words, you wrung me through

Whoa, oh oh
Love is the end
So lets not pretend
'Cause love is the end

So I tread the only road
The only road I know
Nowhere to go, but home
Nowhere to go
Maybe our time is up
But still you can't look back
But all the principles of love
Don't save us
Don't save us

this song is told in a 'story' like format... which progresses throughout the song... the song begins with positive tones:

"Now is the time of our comfort and plenty These are the days we've been working for Nothing can touch us, and nothing can hurt us And nothing goes wrong anymore

Singing a song with your feet on the dashboard The cigarette streaming into the night These are the things that I want to remember I want to remember you by"

these two stanzas tell of a relationship that is flourishing and that is going perfectly and to plan... memories are being made and love is plenty...

after the chorus... the song takes a tragic turn... wherein the person in the song is dumped... and experiences the shock of the breakup... and experiences melancholy

"I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean Looking for somewhere to start a-new And when I was drowning in that holy water All I could think of was you"

this stanza leads me to think the person is so distraught at the break up that he rushes into commiting suicide but cannot bring himself to drown himself.

    ...

in the next stanza he could be begging to his former partner to be "taken back" and begs his partner to reconsider...

Take it back, don't let it die Or rage against the fallen night Cos I still do, depend on you So don't say those words, that wrung me through

"those words" refer to him being told he is dumped.

    ...

the final stanza is extremely powerful.. it shows that the man has lost the one light in his life... and now that that light has been diminished.. he is lost in the world and does not know what to do or where to go...

So I tread the only road The only road I know Nowhere to go, but home Nowhere to go Maybe our time is up But still you can't look back But all the principles of love Don't say those words Don't say those words Don't say those words Don't say those words

All in all... this song tells of the power of love... love is the most powerful of feelings one can experience and has the ability to make/ruin lives.

THIS SONG TO ME IS ABOUT GETTING ONE CHANCE AT TRUE LOVE AND IT SLIPPING AWAY, USALLY A FIRST LOVE, LOVE IS THE END MEANING U WONT BE ABLE TO FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT ANYONE ELSE AGAIN, WHEN U FEEL LOVE FOR THE FIRST TIME U CANT IMAGINE ANYTHING GOING WRONG BUT WHEN IT DOES, U FEEL LIKE LOVE IS THE END, U WONT EVER OPEN UR HEART SO WIDE AGAIN.

i agree with both meanings- the friendship being more than a friendship and the more abstract meaning of the end of love feeling like the end of everything... it's a beautiful song anyway

    My Interpretation

Hmmm... I don't think I agree with most of the posts here. The first verse is written in the present. I think the song is picture of temporality and true love: knowing real, deep love with someone -- your lover and best friend -- and also knowing that everything is temporary, that life is short and nothing lasts. I feel like I'm demeaning it by explaining it, but the line "Love is the end" is a beautiful way to say that your love, here in this moment, is the final height of human existence, and this is all there is... something profoundly beautiful and immense and sad.

This song is definitely typically Keane. It's quite negative, the person is getting through a hard time after having a relationship that meant everything to him/her. The person wants to hold on to the good moments and knows he has to move on, but hates it for a moment.

I love this song and can't wait to hear it in high quality.

I'm pretty sure the song is about a breakup. The most powerful verse for me is that second one

"I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean Looking for somewhere to start anew And when I was drowning in that holy water All I could think of was you"

It sounds almost like he was trying to commit suicide... He wanted a new start, but he couldn't leave his past behind.

The chorus makes it seem like he's given up hope of starting over. "Love is the end"... Once you're in love, that's it, you only get one chance.

Actually the first verse is missing... as far as I can understand, it goes:

"Now is the time of our comfort and plenties (?) These are the days we’ve been working for Nothing can touch us and nothing can harm us And nothing goes wrong anymore"

Beautiful song and a nice ending to the album :)

Actually, you're right Yuri. These are the actual lyrics: Now is the time of our comfort and plenty These are the days we've been working for Nothing can touch us and nothing can harm us No, nothing goes wrong anymore

Singing a song with your feet on the dashboard The cigarette streaming into the night These are the things that I want to remember I want to remember you by

They won't come again Cos love is the end Oh no, my friend Love is the end

I took off my clothes and I ran to the ocean Looking for somewhere to start a-new And when I was drowning in that holy water All I could think of was you

Woah, my friend Love is the end So best not pretend Cos love is the end

Take it back, don't let it die Or rage against the fallen night Cos I still do, depend on you So don't say those words, that wrung me through

Woah, oh oh Love is the end So lets not pretend Cos love is the end

So I tread the only road The only road I know Nowhere to go, but home Nowhere to go Maybe our time is up But still you can't look back But all the principles of love Don't say those words Don't say those words Don't say those words Don't say those words

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
