She told me not to step on the cracks
I told her not to fuss and relax
Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks
But now she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I took a knife and cut out her eye
I took it home and watched it wither and die
Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile
That's why she sleeps with one eye open
That's the price she'll pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you pay

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

You made me cry
You made me cry
You made me cry

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out my pie

I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out 'cause you made me cry

    My Interpretation

I think this song's mostly about attempted rape. But as soon as I listened to this song, I knew Florence was singing from a male's perspective, even before I found out this was a cover.

'She told me not to step on cracks' -She warned him not to dare come near her. ‘I told her not to fuss and relax’ —He warned her not to struggle

'Pretty little face stopped me dead in my tracks' -He's obviously attracted to her, since her looks were the first that caught his attention. 'I took a knife and cut out her eye' -I can now safely assume she's rejected him, and succeeded to a certain point. This can also be interpreted as him wanting to teach her a lesson the hard way, since 'Sleeping with one eye open' is a phrase used to show distrust. So he's telling her, if you're so uptight, I'll teach to to permanently distrust everyone. 'That's the price she'll pay' -The price for rejecting him.

'She's lucky I didn't slip her a smile' -A reference to slitting her throat. 'Get your filthy fingers out of my pie' -Filthy, I assume, is because he's already had his way with her and wants nothing more to do with her, or he's insulting her because she refused him. I believe 'Pie' is most likely standing for either his life, or his business.

'I slipped my hand under her skirt, I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt' -I assume, this is when he rounded up on her, trying to get whatever he can out of the girl.

'Oh my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt' -Apparently this wasn't the first time he's done something of the sort. 'I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry' -He obviously didn't cry, but i believe this is an alternative to saying she'd rejected him, and by doing that, insulted his pride. Then we see the second reference to killing in this song, 'Cutting her heart out'. So, according to this, her pursuer has already decided her fate; he was going to kill her.

    Just a thought...

i think this song is definitely about rape (and the girl wanting revenge). it goes from both perspectives, and is sometimes a conversation:

(Boy:)I said, hey Girl with one eye: Get your filthy fingers out of my pie (Boy:)I said, hey Girl with one eye: I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry

    and

(Boy:)I slipped my hand under her skirt I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt (Girl:)Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt (Boy:)That's why you sleep with one eye open That's the price you paid

    etc. etc.

"Arrogant man who trophy collects women but she was innocent and refused him, spurned, he rapes her. Clouded rep - she told ppl. He says shes lucky he dint make her fall in love with him (slip smile) and screw her up more Now he says she has 1 eye shes ugly now, filthy cause shes been raped + she sleeps with 1 eye open - shes frightened. Hes taught her a lesson how dare she say no and make his ego cry and his final warnin is dont interfere in his chances with other girls - his pie being women"

I am not agreeing or disagreeing cause idk, but this is the first meaning i saw.

She told me not to step on the cracks I told her not to fuss and relax Well, her pretty little face stopped me in my tracks -Two women had sex, but the one who was denying her feelings for the other woman 'the girl with one eye' was straight. It was the first time she had done anything like this so the person singing the song is basically telling her to chill out. The 'pretty little face' conveys the innocence of this girl

But now she sleeps with one eye open That's the price she paid

The girl has to be wary because after doing this she doesnt want to lose the fact that she is straight and give in to her sexuality. She has to be careful and thats her punishment for having sex with this woman

I took a knife and cut out her eye - Cut out her eye i think means that she has changed her view on the world

I took it home and watched it wither and die - destroyed her innocence

Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile- lucky i didnt make her fall for me

I said, hey, girl with one eye Get your filthy fingers out of my pie I said, hey, girl with one eye I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry - Pie is a less crude way of saying women's privates i think. Shes basically telling her to leave her alone now because she doesnt want to have lesbain relations and the girl singing the song is not a lesbian either. They were both straight but curious so it seems, and now they want nothing to do with each other - they have caused eachother pain

I slipped my hand under her skirt I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt - i think that this has a deeper meaning. i reckon that she is telling her she wont break her heart or mess her up, but in the end she did.

Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt - reputation for sleeping around and doing things like this

I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry - they screwed eachother over. it was just about sex and fun for one of them but the other had deeper feelings

    Song Meaning

I believe that this song is about an abuse relationship where the abuser believes that they are the victim.

The verses make her out to be an abuser and the line "Oh, my reputation's kinda clouded with dirt" is her denying it while the chorus "You made me cry" says that she is the one being hurt by her partner.

The reason that the partner is a female may be to make the other one look weaker which could be another reason the character singing this song is the abuser.

I hear it as a two way conversation. Between the guy who takes advantage of a girl and the girl coming back at him (and probably every other man after him).

The guy is the one talking in the verses.

And the girl comes back is the chorus... "I said, HEY!" girl with one eye, "Get your filthy fingers out of my pie." "I said, HEY!" girl with one eye, "I'll cut your little heart out cause you made me cry."

i don't think it's about a lesbian experience, it's a cover and the original song was by a male punk band, she just loved the song - as do i!!!

i think this is about sex and revenge - fintimes! but i don't think 'get your filthy fingers out of my pie' is a euphamism(?) its like the saying 'he/she has his/her fingers in many pies' as in lots of enterprises/projects'oppurtunities going on at once so its basically the guy (who i think this song is from the perspective of)telling this girl to butt out of his life because her effect is destroying his apathetic ways, hence all the revenge 'i'll cut your little heart out cos you made me cry'!!!

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
