You are the girl that I've been dreaming of
Ever since I was a little girl
You are the girl that I've been dreaming of
Ever since I was a little (ever) girl (since)

One, I'm biting my tongue
Two, he's kissin' on you
Three, oh, why can't you see?
One, two, three, four

The word's on the streets and it's on the news
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you
He's got two left feet and he bites my moves
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance, dance, dance, dance
The second I do, I know we're gonna be through
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you
He don't suspect a thing, I wish he'd get a clue
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance, dance, dance, dance

You are the girl that I've been dreaming of
Ever since I was a little girl
You are the girl that I've been dreaming of
Ever since I was a little girl (ever since)

One, I'm biting my tongue
Two, he's kissin' on you
Three, oh, why can't you see?
One, two, three, four

The word's on the streets and it's on the news
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you
He's got two left feet and he bites my moves
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance, dance, dance, dance
The second I do, I know we're gonna be through
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you
He don't suspect a thing, I wish he'd get a clue
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance, dance, dance, dance (uh-oh)

Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

One, you're biting my tongue
Two, I'm kissin' on you
Three, is he better than me?
One, two, three, four

The word's on the streets and it's on the news
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you
He's got two left feet and he bites my moves
I'm not gonna teach him how to dance, dance, dance, dance (oh)

Do-do-do-do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do-do-do-do, do-do-do-do-do-do-do

    Song Meaning

This song, although sung by a male, is written from a female perspective. It's about feelings of bi-curiosity in the teenage years. The lead singer's sister wrote this song, and she is a lesbian.

"You are the girl that I've been dreaming of Ever since I was a little girl"

    • Ironic because perhaps a lot of little girls dream about their prince charming.

"I'm biting my tongue He's kissing on you Oh, why can't you see?"

    • She's keeping her mouth shut - the interest of her affections has a boyfriend.

"I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you He don't suspect a thing, I wish he'd get a clue"

The boyfriend has no idea of the relationship between the two girls. The speaker think's he's an idiot. ....

"You're biting my tongue I'm kissing on you Is he better than me?"

Now, her feeling are made apparent and the girls are kissing. Speaker snidely remarks: Is he better than me?

    My Interpretation

Honestly, I think this song is about a girl being in love with another girl. Maybe she's friends with the other girl and her boyfriend. I think the boyfriend kind of wants tips on how to please the girl (or really how to dance) and the narrator doesn't want to teach him "how to dance with her". You know, she dislikes that they're together enough, she secretly wants them to break up, so why would she help them? Possible there is/was a bit of a thing going on between the narrator and other girl and she just thinks if she helps him it'll all be over with the girl. Like maybe the narrator keeps thinking about how bad for her the guy is and how she wishes he would just "get a clue" and realize what's going on between them... I actually completely understand this feeling just more from a "You are the guy that I've been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl... "I'm not gonna teach her how to dance with you" perspective

When I first heard this song my kinda interpretation of it was that the line "You are the girl that I've been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl", kinda showed how properly 'in love' he is with her as guys are sometimes like "god, im such a girl!" when they say soppy stuff about love and things lol so it might be saying how hes a bit of a girl about these things and the idea of love and the depth of his feelings. Kinda puttin himself down also which works with the "is he better than me?" with the self- doudt.

Dont really know though as readin what you have all been suggesting kinda makes me doudt that as a lot of you have some good points that when you read again you can see.

I would be real interested to hear what the band say they wrote it to mean but i bet they'd say as most bands do that it means what it means 2 you and how you interpret it to be for urself lol, thats what they always say.

obsessed with this song lol. And that line was a pretty gd idea considerin its got ppl talkin lol so everyones listenin 2 the song.

    I might be way off:

I'm feeling the singer is maybe a dance teacher/dance partner, wants to be with the girl, and the girl has asked if they'll teach her boyfriend to dance.

the singer role is jealous, wants to say something but cant ''im biting my tongue, he's kissing on you, why cant you see?''

they're scared if they teach her boyfriend how to dance they'll have no special bond any more as their only connection is through dancing: ''the second I do, I know we're gonna be through''

im still unsure of the girl: girl...maybe its generdless intention, but it would have worked ''you are the girl, ive been dreaming of, ever since i was a little boy''

maybe its a lesbian dance instructor! who knows?!

I have a doubt, the first verse is OK, but then he says something like "You are the girl that I've been dreaming of ever since I wasn't after ourselves"?

    Beautiful, happy and deep song.

no to the person above. he definitely says "you are the girl i've been dreaming of ever since i was a little girl." it's supposed to be in the morrissey school of gender-ambiguous songwriting.

but i agree totally about it being a beautiful, happy and deep song. it's like getting a slice of those feelings that you felt about other people in your late teens/early twenties. really, the 'kids' in this band's name has never been more fitting.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation.
