I'm Making Eyes at You Lyrics
Best song on album. I love this all references to buddhism on this album.
this song grew on me the more i listened to it. it feels like sitting in a crowded bar across from someone you used to date, or maybe you have a secret relationship that no one else knows about, and you're just making eyes at each other, smiling and saying everything without saying a word. he asks her not to speak because things are better when they aren't talking or dancing. i love that feeling.
This is what I get from the song and how it relates to me:
This song is about admiring someone you don't know well but you see often (ex. work, school, passing by) and you think they are wonderful/amazing/beautiful. However, you never attempt to talk to them because you realize this image you have built up for them is unrealistic and something they could never live up to, so instead you just pretend like it is true and keep admiring them from a far.
Story of my freaking life!!
Story of my freaking life!!
That's exactly my thought. This song is about platonic love, when you 'love' a person who you don't even know and you have the idea of how that person is and most of the time, the person is totally different.

So he doesn't wanna 'kill the mystique' of that platonic love.

Y'all are sounding mighty stoopid! Plantonic love would require two people know each other (and know each other well), so they would have had to have met (probably many times). And "mystique" is not all it's cracked up to be; life isn't a Hollywood film. Ya think all those elderly couples walking aorund holding hands and helping each other with their dentures have "mistique" in their relationship. Mystique is another name for lust, which in ALL relationships EVOLVES after the first few months of spending time together. If you want mystique, may I suggest you NEVER plan on having a...

If you want mystique, may I suggest you NEVER plan on having a long-term loving quality relationship. Stick with one night stands and summer flings. I've not done those (well, maybe once or twice:), but for me they weren't all that fulfilling...
So this is the best song on the album.
I love right before the 2nd chorus when he says:
"I'm making eyes at you That's all I ever do"
Great song, awesome album--new favorite band at the moment!!
is it just me or does this song sound a little like eyes without a face by billy idol
the way his voice is and the chorus with the backup vocals and it also has "eyes" in the title
maybe i'm just being dumb that was just my first impression of the song
It's definitely got the same feel as Eyes Without a Face. I was listening to Billy Idol and happened to get Partie Traumatic on the same day.

It's a great song about someone who loves the idea of being in love. At the same time, he knows that the possibilities of a dream are easily dashed by reality. He can't continue to enjoy making eyes at the beautiful woman across the room if he goes over and talks to her and discovers she is not the person he built her up to be in his head.

I think this song is about one of those unattainable crushes, where the whole fun of it is that nothing will ever come of it. He doesn't want to speak to her, because then he'll know the real her instead of the idea of her that he's come up with. "Oh please don't, please don't speak You'll kill the mystique"
i'm surprised this doesn't have more comments. i think it's one of the best songs on the album. it's one of my favorites at least
I think this is really being into a very attractive slag, I think the first verse shows uncertainty about it all.
"So you want my affection We both know you'll only throw it away But if you must have a go, fine, okay If you must have a go, then go away" -So you want my affection to make yourself feel better, it's not like you would actually appreciate it but fine whatever I'll give it to you, nevermind just go away I don't really want this.
"I'm making eyes at you I've been making these eyes now, making these eyes since '82 I've been making them green and grey and brown and delta blues I'm reciting a mantra but I can't tell you cos you're missing to me That's all you'll ever be" -Making eyes, I think we all know what that means, reciting a mantra possibly repeating to himself how much he wants her but he can't tell her because she's not his (cos you're missing to me), and she never will be (that's all you'll ever be)
You are missing to me And I am missing much Your sleepy panda eyes, those dangerous thighs, your dirty touch You are the wildest one But you're the one that I want I'm making eyes at you That's all I ever do -I don't have you, and I know I'm missing out, panda eyes as in when eyeliner smudges, wildest one as in she sleeps around and is carefree but he still wants her, but all he does is make eyes at her.
"Oh please don't, please don't speak You'll kill the mystique Oh baby let's not, let's not dance We'll ruin our chances Oh, in between the drinks I can't help but think that Even as we speak We kill the mystique" -Don't speak because it'll make it obvious I don't have you and if they talk, it ruins the fake relationship like atmosphere of casual sex.
It is about wanting someone, but not wanting to know them. It is all based on attraction and sexual need. It is nothing to do with wanting a relationship, rather than someone to play with.
