I can see clearly now, the rain has gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day
It's gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day

I think I can make it now, the pain has gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is that rainbow I've been praying for
It's gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day

Look all around, there's nothing but blue sky
Look straight ahead, nothing but blue sky

I can see clearly now, the rain has gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone're the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day
It's gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day
Gonna be a bright, bright sun-shining day
Gonna be a bright, bright, bright sun-shining day

Here's a case where everyone is reading too much into the lyrics. I heard a radio interview with Johnny Nash years ago: turns out he wrote this song while lying in a hospital bed recovering from successful cataract surgery.

Wow, I believe the majority of songs ever created include some type of denotation of something either postitive or negative. Depression is a major branch of the ones who encompass pain. Although, the meaning is obvious, I think this song really goes a long way in expressing the spirit of picking one's self up. Everyone goes through trials and tribulations in their life. But it's important to remember that although tomorrow is never promised, if it comes, it's a whole new chance to live again.

    Song Meaning

I'm trying to change the words for our Relay for Life event. Instead of the rain is gone I would like it to say cancer's gone and it's going to be a bright cancer free day!

    My Interpretation

To me, the song is saying that it's good to be aware of all of the bad things in the world, and the trials and tribulations that one might have to go through, but to not focus on them, and instead focus on the good aspects of life.

"I can see clearly now, the rain is gone I can see all obstacles in my way" The "rain" here refers to troubles that he was personally going through, but even though he got through those personal troubles, there's still plenty of bad things going on in the world, obstacles for living a good life.

"Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind It's gonna be a bright sun-shiny day." However, even though there are obstacles in his way, he remembers that his personal troubles have faded and for him, he's going to be able to enjoy a sunny day.

"I think I can make it now, the pain is gone All of the bad feelings have disappeared Here is that rainbow I've been prayin' for." All of these lines produce an image of pushing forward and breaking through the strife you might have in your life. Forward momentum, riding atop a cheerful rainbow with good vibes carrying oneself forward.

"Look all around, there's nothin' but blue skies" This line, to me, is saying that even with the obstacles one might face, if you look around there's plenty of good to focus on as well.

"Look straight ahead, nothin' but blue skies" Again, references to forward momentum, pushing through bad times and focusing on the good, on the "blue skies".

I like to hear what the lyrics mean to the listener. Variety is a spice of life. :)

penlight decided to change all the lyrics (9 years ago) to ones they thought "sounded better" instead of what they actually are. Although cancer might be bad, the actual lyrics don't talk about it. No wonder half the lyrics on this site are wrong all the time.

Beautiful and moving song. I know everyone says it's upbeat, but in my opinion the mood is ambivalent. This makes me think that the person has dealt with major hardship and/or sadness and is now trying to convince himself that it is all going to be better, but there is an undertone of doubt and sadness nonetheless.

    My Opinion

Simply put, the rain and obstacles are created by the fearful mind. When the mind frees itself of its restrictions, suddenly it becomes in tune with life, and everything is laid out before you. "Look all around, nothing but blue sky" is you finally becoming in touch with God.

    Deep song.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
