"Come On Get Higher" as written by Mark Weinberg and Matt Nathanson....
I miss the sound of your voice
And I miss the rush of your skin
And I miss the still of the silence
As you breathe out and I breathe in

If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what's next
I'd make you believe
I'd make you forget

[Chorus]
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love

I miss the sound of your voice
Loudest thing in my head
And I ache to remember
All the violent, sweet
Perfect words that you said

If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what's next
I'd make you believe
I'd make you forget

[Chorus]

I miss the pull of your heart
I taste the sparks on your tongue
I see angels and devils
And God, when you come on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Sing sha la la la
Sing sha la la la la

Ooh Ooh Ooh

[Chorus]

It's all wrong, it's all wrong
It's all wrong, it's so right
So come on, get higher
So come on and get higher
'Cause everything works, love
Everything works in your arms.

General Comment"if I could walk on water
if i could tell you what's next
    make you believe
    make you forget"

If he could show her in some grandiose fashion (such as walking on water) to make her believe they can work things out, he would do it. He wants to make her forget the bad times that led to the breakup and believe that they can work through them. Believe in him.

"I miss the sound of your voice
the loudest thing in my head
    and I ache to remember
all the violent, sweet, perfect words that you said"

It's been awhile since the breakup as evidenced by him having trouble remembering all the little details. He's trying hard to retain those memories. And in his rosy retrospection, even her "violent" words (the yelling, the bad) are tolerable. He misses it all.

"I miss the pull of your heart
I taste the sparks on your tongue
I see angels and devils and god when you come on
    hold on..."

They have an undeniable chemistry together (sparks) and it was a deep, true and passionate love.

    "come on get higher
    come on and get higher
    because everything works love
because everything works in your heart"

He is saying if it's real love, then they should be able to work it all out. Love supercedes all. Or it does in theory. It obviously hasn't here.

My InterpretationI agree with many here that his is a great song, and on SO many levels..
Musically and lyrically it is beautiful and rich and sensual.

As for the meaning, this song is true art, as a musical mirror of the listeners own experience and sexuality.

To a teen, it can be a celebration of the beauty and intensity of love/sex

Later in life it can be apologetic for longing for a loss from a careless transgression.

Or even as one is older still, a song that encompasses the intensity and complexity of a loving, sexual relationship with all the beauty and baggage that goes with it..

so, here goes, One way to see it....

verse 1, clearly the singer is recalling and longing for the experience with "lovee" in the situation, the description of the sexual intensity and sensual pleasure surrounding the experience makes it very strong imagery..

Pre-chorus. If I could change anything/everything, if i was all powerful, I would tell you how great our future is, and have you believe we were great/supposed to be together/meant for each other/perfect and... forget transgressions/breakup/can't manage to take out the trash.. etc... If I could control the universe, I would be back there with you..

    Chorus:
come on get higher : come on feel better, this is how, be with me
Loosen my lips : Kiss me you fool.. you know you want to
Faith and desire : reminding her that she once believed in him and wanted him
Swing of your hips : back to the point of the whole bit, come on baby lets do it..
Pull me down hard: Take back what you know you want..
Drown me in Love: This is the key. Love is all powerful, all encompassing, it can lift you up or take you over, or both and for better or worse. Being so intense is what humans all seek, but when it's that strong, you loose control....

From here it can go so many directions...
Loudest thing in my head: could be all the wonderful things said, or all the blame and shame when the cheater is caught...
Violent, Sweet Words that you Said: could be truth to power or down and dirty sexy talk, but all in the passion of love where one has little control...

    Bridge..
I miss the pull of your heart: Missing the love and intimate connection shared, the intensity and bonding of the act
I taste the sparks on your tongue: The electricity of new/old/intense connection
I see Angels and Devils: The duality of being intensely in love, what one longs for but can mean the loss of self and/or the entrapment of ones self in a less than desirable situation....

And of course, the beauty of the ecstasy and sharing it... nothing like it..

Rest of the song pretty much just wraps it up, love/sex/lust is at the same moment the one thing that can go so wrong, yet always be all right in the moment, the perfect moment, when everything does seem to be right with the world. Until you sober up, then you have to untangle whatever mess you just made.....
    Just kidding..

General CommentJust saw Matt last night at Hotel Cafe playing all new material and he introduced the song saying he can't go into the real meaning on the radio because the stations get fined, so he explains it as:

"Did you ever eat a bowl of ice cream that was just the best fucking ice cream you've ever eaten? And it's so good it makes your teeth hurt and you can't stop eating it and you just want to pull that ice cream's hair and slap its ass and really bruise it up and make it hurt a little bit. That's what this song's about. I think I just wrote an R. Kelly song."

General CommentI think I have to agree with Magomra, this one is easily becoming my favorite Matt Nathanson song.

I don't think there's much to really grab at here. He misses the chick he was with and clearly misses the sex a lot.

One thing about Matt, he never shies away from talking about sex in his songs. That's definitely the case here. As blatant as you can be.

General CommentI think this song means that no matter what happens in their (his and whichever girl he had in mind when he wrote this song) relationship, everythings always gonna be okay in her arms. And when they're not together, he misses her. This song always makes me cry. My last boyfriend and me were really close and we broke up.

General CommentI think this song really could mean something different to every person. Like a spouse could be in the military and gone and their saying that they miss them. Or it could be a break up song. It all depends on what point of view that you look at it from. But whatever it means, I freaking LOVE this song. :)

General CommentThis is my favorite Nathanson song. At first it seems like a simple "I miss you" song but there's a lot of religious imagery here that makes me wonder if he's getting at something regarding faith and spirituality.

General CommentThis is a great song to start a great album. Some Mad Hope is fantastic. I love it.

This song is about a girl he misses, obviously. And how fantastic it felt to be with her. She brought higher than he's ever been.
