This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

I'd be gutted if I wrote this song and read this page. For a start the lyrics up there are wrong, and the song is so simple to understand, it's about people judging him or picking on him for the way he is and dresses. He wants to be fake and dress pretty and enjoy life. Without people starting on him for no reason.
If you dress in a way that makes chav's make stupid jokes in the street then you'd know his feelings well. They don't offend at all, because it is a retard making a stupid comment to you. But it is insanely annoying that you can predict trouble from 100 metres away.
