This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

It's brilliant, but if you listen closely you can hear where they've pieced together two recordings. He didn't sing it all the way through, they cheated. Heh.

I remember hearing this for the first time (1988), I wanted to know how long that guy practiced this before recording. I could never pull it off. Fantastic song, and it's a shame McDonald's had to go and rip them off for that commercial years ago (where a guy starts going through the menu with this song in the background).
I remember being maybe 10 and writing down all the words I thought they said (I'm 18 now). I did a pretty good job, because when I sang it it sounded like I saw saying the words..even though I had no idea what they were actually saying. I can sing it all with the right words now :)
Now, in the last part of this song, they take bits and peices from other classic songs. I know that when the say "I wanna take you higher," that it's from the Sly and the family Stone song, and I know that the "celebrate, celebrate, dance to the music," is from the three dog night song. However, what is the "ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo ooo," melody from? Could one of you tell me?
I believe it's "Baby, I Need Your Loving" by The Four Tops. Life is a Rock was my very first 45 purchase when I was 11. I had a Seeburg 100 Juke Box in my Bedroom and went on to buy over 400 45's with my lawn mowing money. Still have em' all, too!
